Similarities... (contains spoilers, I guess)

If anyone else who has seen this has also seen the music video for Tori Amos's song "Spark", would you say that the ending of the film is similar to the scenario depicted in the music video? The song was released in '97/'98ish, so the music video was probably made before this movie, so the video couldn't have been influenced by the film. Could it have been the other way around? Is there any way it could have been a fluke, what with her stepping into the river at the end of the chase, and the little girl mentioning being put in the trunk of a car and being set on fire? I couldn't help but be struck by the similarities - did anyone else see this as well?

You've got a point!
The credits say that the movie was based on a novel, so maybe Tori Amos did read it and was inspired by this scene. And, you know, she's known for being quite eccentric.

The book the film is closely based on was published in 97, considering it takes about 9 months to a year to write and publish a book I imagine it's just a coincidence, or that Amos was inspired by the book. It's not an original conceit in either case.

The book was actually published in 1996 (I am looking at my copy as I write this). I read an interview with Laura Kasischke in the paper today, and she said the rough draft took a month, and the revision took a year and a half, so that would mean she started it in 1994 or so (of course, who's to say how she came up with the ending). I've never seen this movie, and only found out about its existence becuase of this article. I will have to check it out.

I can see Kasischke as a fan of Amos, the raw emotion & very blunt way of looking at situations. Would it be possible that Amos might ahve read the book and was inspired by it? I don't know much about Amos (tho I saw her in concert a couple months ago and thought she was incredible), and my time line might be screwy.
