How did the preg friend just happen to find her in the river?

In the novel, I believe you could see the river from the motel.

It could also be that the preg girl was now on shift at the hotel and the girl was missing for a night and didn't show up for her shift. Preg girl thought to check at the dock at the river because the girl always smoked there every day.
