Just watched that scene and I was wondering the same thing that's why I came to the message boards. I don't see any threads on it though :/

As she leaves, he says something else to Cage regarding her. Did you not hear that part?

Don't know it verbatim, but he says something like - 9 bucks - that's all it takes. All it takes is 9 bucks.

I think it was because she was dishonest about how much she gave. She only gave him the dollar bill, and when he gave her back too much money, she didn't do anything.

reply

He did it on purpose to test her to see if she would be honest and tell him that he gave her too much money back. She had a look like "Wow, he doesn't realize he gave me too much change back. See you, sucker!"

That's why he was so disappointed and talked about character.

in case you didn't notice from the movie, Cash was some kind of angel, and it's his job to test people. Didn't you catch the beginning where he says Jack's good deed "was noticed to the top levels of the organization"?

reply

I'm laughing at this thread, because I can't believe the people above Bango never caught that. Wow, I mean, they must be going crazy over how Jack woke up with Tea Leoni in the suburbs one morning.

He made her 'think' he made a mistake in thinking she actually gave him a 10 dollar bill, instead of a single. To see if she'd correct him, and be honest. When she didn't say anything after he announced "99 cents out of 10", he went one step farther, and counted out the change back to her- "5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 1 cent" giving her time to reconsider and be a good honest person, and say "oh no, I only gave you a one". THAT would be something a person of good character would do. That's why he was disappointed in her, and expressed it. For a lousy 9 dollars, she did the wrong thing.

I got it right away. Don is an 'angel' someone who can help people if they come across as helpable. Cage's character stood up to the gunman and Don's character saw someone who would be able to benefit from going through a testing time.

I feel good when I'm given too much change and honestly speak up and tell cashier I'm being given too much. Don's character was testing that young woman, and she failed. Had she been honest, he might have given her a dream of a possible other way her life could go, to benefit her, or some other angelic gift. But she showed her colors and he felt she wasn't deserving.

He's testing her to see if she will be honest and tell him about the money. He did it on purpose and she failed. He was an angel. It kind of indicates that since she was dishonest she's probably going to hell...

Sometimes I wonder just how old are the people asking these questions, because if I have to tell you what's up then I'm sure that one time in your life someone gave you more change than you were supposed to get and you kept quiet about it.

reply

I actually did this by accident at my job. I realized the mistake right after the guy walked away. He kept the money and didn't say peep. I like to think I was cash money testing him lol.

It was for something like $30

Human society is becoming stupid

He clearly is an angel who does morality tests

The girl pretended to give him a 10 but was really a 1. He gave her change for a 10. She didn't say anything.
