Fred Willard - Genius!!

Fred Willard's role as the commentator was amazin. Had me giggling through the whole dog show.

One of my favourite comedic roles ever, brilliant!

reply

and I cannot imagine anybody but him pulling that role off like he did.

reply

The fact that the whole movie is hilarious, that practically everyone raises their game and he STILL steals the whole thing speaks volumes.

"Lemme ask you something: If you get a French dog, a Chinese dog, a German dog, do they all bark the same?"

reply

To the OP. You should see A mighty wind. Hes absolutely hilarious in that aswell

"Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day"

reply

Absolutely. WHA' HAPPENED?

reply

When I saw dodgeball, all I could think while watching Jason Bateman do a similar commentary was "Fred Willard could do this better!"
Best part of the movie IMO, absolutly hilarious

Fred Willard really is a comedic genius, but anytime he is in a Christopher Guest vehicle he nearly steals the show. He is one of the funniest men alive.

"...and to think that in some countries these dogs are eaten."

"When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk."

reply

"I've taken spongebaths in bowls smaller than that one."

This is this.

reply

I agree completely, just saw this again and Willard turns in one of the best comedic performances ever. His fellow commentator compliments him perfectly and makes Willard even funnier.

reply

he is AWESOME!

reply

What's even more impressive is that Fred's scenes were filmed separately from the dog scenes -- there was nothing actually happening in front of him during the commentary.

I also have to give his co-star, Jim Piddock, credit for not cracking up. They played off each other beautifully.

reply

Very good point. I agree with all the posters, but his role isn't as funny without his nonsense paired off with that stodgy Brit.

reply

She looks like a cocktail waitress on an oil rig.

"...and we'll see you tomorrow night!"

reply

His bit was hysterical!!!! :D

Better to also have the straightman, Beckwith acting like a normal person! ;)

reply

How much do you think I can bench press?

reply

The real fred willard started this thread. Everyone say, "Hi, Fred. Now get back to work." (he takes every job he's offered)

If there's an empty space, just fill it with a line. . even if it's from another show.

reply

HEY WHA HAPPENED???
fred willard completely steals the show in every guest film (with the possible exception of guffman)
there is something so funny about that man! joyous idiocy! every word that comes out of his mouth makes me laugh.
i don't know of him outside of guest films, is he this funny in anything else?

reply

Fred Willard has been a genius since Fernwood Tonight. The greatest tv sidekick ever.

reply

and he ad-libbed many of his lines-should have received a best supporting actor nomination

reply

I agree. In a movie with such outstanding performances, he steals the show! I love Mr. Willard, but this was his best.

This film, by the way, should be required viewing at every film & acting school. What delights me every time I watch it is that it is all improv! I have so much respect for actors that can actually act, and keep in mind, comedy is the most difficult to pull off.

So kudos to Mr. Willard - to be outstanding in an outstanding film.

Well, what I've read is that the way 'they' set up these movies is to basically let the cast ad-lib a LOT of the dialogue, and Fred being a connsumate comedian, probably had a LOT of input and fun with his scenes! ;)

Hello, I like movies! :)

reply

"I once took an obedience class, it was going well until they spilled the hot candle wax on my private parts."

reply

He shouldn't have received a nomination, he should have WON

reply

It is to Fred's credit that he steals the show when we're focusing on the dogs and their owners. And I love his idea of dressing the bloodhound up with a hat and a pipe.

reply

"I tell ya, if you're wearing an outfit like that in my neighborhood you better be a hotel doorman."
