The show was formed when the writers strike was looming in LA

Back in 99, the writers strike was looming in LA, so producers green lighted a reality show and cast from the millions of out of work, actors, models, porn stars, etc. Most of those "actors" had side jobs to pay the bills as bartenders or models or what have you, but it boils down to 90 percent ofthe people going on the show where there to perform and try to get an acting job.

Plus, the show paid them to be on the show. Blind date was not real dating,it was a show designed to make ratings when the writers strike did happen. The show only continued because the reality show culture had taken over and so the show stayed on the air.

Thats the background of the show.
