It wasn't that bad, actually

I watched this on my day off...wasn't expecting much. But the story itself wasn't bad, and the actors were all very attractive....even though it was a bit cliched, I was glad to see the characters portrayed as being very masculine, upscale citizens. Being a gay guy myself, we don't see a lot of that in film.

It's just 90 minutes long, and there are a few laughs in it. Check it out!

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

ekentb: I agree with you it isn't often we get to see two guys in an masculine role such as this . I thought all the primary part done well. The drag queen would have been out of place anywhere , and the gun should never have been written-in.

i wish the gun part weren't there...then it would've been perfect.[ except for the low-budget look] i loved the film.

I hated that gun, and I hated they left the mother alone unsupervised with the kids, even if it is just in the living room. I hated they tolerated the mom bringing some strange man home. That should have been a deal breaker for the mom continuing to stay, especially considering the older boy's reaction and that gun. It demonstrated that man was some kind of threat in the boys earlier lives. And I hated they left the liquor out in the open after the boy had been caught with it! They weren't very great parents themselves, though I must admit, their idiocy could be due to their inexperience. I hated that Eric was sleeping with other men, and that he could head to someone's house and sleep with them on the very night he took a break from his lover.

However, I could have lived with all of that and called the movie okay, mostly because of the unconventional and brilliant idea of inviting the mom in and offering her dinner. My first instinct was the same as Eric's: confront her and throw her out, but the actions of Phil surprised and delighted me. Also, his actions would solidly answer that famous question, "what would Jesus do." I also could have lived with it because of the way the movie seemed to demonstrate the messiness of life, and not the clean cut way we expect Hollywood to tell a story. Where they lost me is when they discovered the boys missing and did NOTHING for several days! They should have been on the phone immediately. However, they shouldn't have left the boys with the mother to begin with. Eric and Phil should have had parental rights terminated after that! The strawberry thing was nice, and the "friend" throwing out Eric's clothes was really funny, but the rest of the ending of how they found the boys, and the explanation why they left, and the way they talked things out in 2 minutes at a picnic table was so incredibly lame.

The story was completely uninspired. I mean, was there a person in the audience who didn't know right from the start that the boys would be adopted by the gay couple? Even the worst hack in Hollywood could have written this whole screenplay in about fifteen minutes.

Yes, it was sweet and cute, but it just didn't have any real reason to watch it. There have been dozens of movies made with the same plot and all of them were done much better than this.

If it weren't for the mildly interesting gay twist to an old story, there would be no reason at all to watch it.

I agree with you bing-57 but regrettably I have not seen many films on Gay Adoption. Can you recommend some?

Thanks

reply

Offhand, I'd recommend "Bear Cub."

But no, there aren't too many that are about gay adoption. Most are about straight adoption. But they both have the same plot and the same complications.

Just because a movie is about a rarely seen subject (gay adoption) doesn't mean that the movie is automatically good.

I'd gladly watch any number of good movies about gay adoption. But this attempt was limp and uninspired. The gay angle didn't really add anything special to the age-old adoption story.

Again, I totally agree with you. I wish there were more movies with this subject... I don't know may be my biological clock is ticking.

By the way, I saw "Cachorro" (Bear Cub), including the deleted scenes, and I liked that movie very much. I was really impressed with the maturity and openness with which the subject was treated.

Let me know if you hear of any other good movie with this subject.

Two other good movies with a similar family-related theme are As Luck Would Have It (Le hasard fait bien les choses) and Shelter.

"That's one a the two things I need right now."

Thank you redilirvi. I saw them both. "Shelter" is great. And "Le hasard fait bien les choses" is also quite good.
