I hated that gun, and I hated they left the mother alone unsupervised with the kids, even if it is just in the living room. I hated they tolerated the mom bringing some strange man home. That should have been a deal breaker for the mom continuing to stay, especially considering the older boy's reaction and that gun. It demonstrated that man was some kind of threat in the boys earlier lives. And I hated they left the liquor out in the open after the boy had been caught with it! They weren't very great parents themselves, though I must admit, their idiocy could be due to their inexperience. I hated that Eric was sleeping with other men, and that he could head to someone's house and sleep with them on the very night he took a break from his lover.
However, I could have lived with all of that and called the movie okay, mostly because of the unconventional and brilliant idea of inviting the mom in and offering her dinner. My first instinct was the same as Eric's: confront her and throw her out, but the actions of Phil surprised and delighted me. Also, his actions would solidly answer that famous question, "what would Jesus do." I also could have lived with it because of the way the movie seemed to demonstrate the messiness of life, and not the clean cut way we expect Hollywood to tell a story. Where they lost me is when they discovered the boys missing and did NOTHING for several days! They should have been on the phone immediately. However, they shouldn't have left the boys with the mother to begin with. Eric and Phil should have had parental rights terminated after that! The strawberry thing was nice, and the "friend" throwing out Eric's clothes was really funny, but the rest of the ending of how they found the boys, and the explanation why they left, and the way they talked things out in 2 minutes at a picnic table was so incredibly lame.
