Clearing Up The Movie!

I love this movie! The first time I saw it, I fell in love with the music, the gentle sounds, the love story and the idea of the curse and how it can be broken... The whole movie just really touched me. I've noticed that there are quite a few people who are confused about the movie, so I wanted to try to clear it up a little. We'll see if this helps...

In the beginning, after Silly is born, we learn that the first child of the fish season is usually regarded as a "Threat" because there's the chance they will bring the curse onto the island where the people live. Silly (a nickname for Celia) is that child. When she is being baptised, a woman tells her children to "stay away from that girl." The two children are Pete and his sister, who is the mother of the young girl who winds up moving back to the island. That's where they fit into the story.

The young girl who moves back has recently lost a boyfriend in a motorcycle accident. In moving back to the island, her mother feels that the setting will help her come to grips with her loss. She meets Celia and reads her book, which forces her to face the loss of her loved one, the same fate that Silly's boyfriend had. In facing her loss, she has cleared the "burden" of the curse on Silly, thus the rush of fish in the ocean in the end of the film. We can tell that the young girl has come to grips with her loss because she plays her violin in the end of the film, which she would not do because of her boyfriend's death.

HOPE THAT HELPS!!! Feel free to ask any questions!
