This movie isn't as bad as people make it out to be

I liked this movie. There is a point to this story and it has nothing to do with curses. It has to do with the fact that life sucks. When Silly wants to go in the water no one let's her. It's as if they're controlling her. They treat her like a child and she can't do anything. She wants to grow up and fall in love but they won't let her do that either. It's referring to how life isn't free and how you pay for everything even if you haven't done anything wrong. It also has to do with how being a teenager isn't easy. Claire's boyfriend dies while she's stuck still living. It hurts so bad for her plus on top of that she has to leave home. So the fact that someone else feels what she feels helps relieve her pain. At the end of the movie Silly says that being the chosen one doesn't hurt as much as taking the chosen one's love. It's just a movie to show you that life hurts no matter what you do. I think a lot of people don't like this movie because they don't see the main point and that they want that whole goody goody ending where she lives happily ever after. If I had a dollar for ever movie like that I'd be a freaking millionaire. I'd rather watch a movie that just comes out there and tells the plain damn truth. I'm tired of all these stupid fake movies that don't have anything to do with real life. I know that the curse doesn't but everything else in that movie does. In fact curses can exist if you're a witch or something. I suggest you don't put down this movie unless you can see the real point of the movie.

Well, I saw the point the movie was making (I certainly hoped it wasn't about that "silly" curse), I just didn't think it made its point very compellingly. I'm not saying it was horrible--just rather amateurish. There were several scenes where it looked as if they settled for the first take even though the actors where just walking through the scene to get a feel for it.
take for example, the scene where Kirsten Dunst first makes her appearance and lights up her pipe. She looked incredibly awkward. Or when she and her new beau were walking in the surf and talking--most of it was okay, but when "Silly" laughs when he talks about what he thinks happens to people when they die, it seems as stilted and unreal as it could be. I happen to be a fan of Ms. Dunst, and I know she is capable, so I must assume the direction was lacking. The whole film is uneven--sometimes the acting is good, sometimes mediocre, and occasionally amazingly poor. Sometimes the dialogue sounds real, and at other times it's like we're listening to the latest script from a talented 7th grader. Another problem I had with the film was the insipid music--the most annoying soundtrack I've encountered in a good while.

One problem I did NOT have with the movie, was its relatively downbeat tone. As evidence, let me note that one of my favorite films in the last ten years was The Sweet Hereafter--certainly one of THE most downbeat movies in history (if you're not familiar with it, it deals with the aftermath of an accident in which most of the children from a small town are killed when a school bus crashes into an icy river).

But, Hey! Those of you who enjoyed it--don't let me disuade you. Cheerio!

This movie sucks ass. I just wasted 140 minutes of my life watching it. What a piece of literal fish trash! Ya'll have lost your f*ing minds.

Why do I get the feeling that you are one of those people that thinks Godzilla or Terminator are the only types of good movies?

Well the movie has a rather forced symbolism ( e.g. the broken Mirror at the beginning ). The score combines the worst elements of Braveheart and Titanic ( And I did like Titanic ). There are more camera shots spent to panaromic scenes than the Lovestory, if there ever was any noticeable one.
Praise for including a book by Stefan Zweig, but otherwise this whole movie only delievers a rather wellknown but not well filled frame for a story.

Although I disagree with your interpretation, I agree that the movie isn't as bad as people are making it out to be.

In fact I quite liked the film, and 18 years ago, loved it!

As for Silly and Claire's characters, I find them to be selfish brats actually, a lot of the featured adults in the film except for James' parents were going out of their way to protect, love, and reach out to these kids. The doctor for example was unjustly mistreated by Silly, when he was simply trying to protect her knowing that her death would be the way to lift the curse for 50 years. In his way, because of his love for the mother, he was protecting Silly. And if these kids don't like being treated like children, perhaps they shouldn't act like one throwing a nasty tantrum?
