No offense but... What a BAD Movie!

Wow! I seriously did NOT like this movie. The plot sucked and the acting was mediocre. I thought the curse would be something more dramatic and I thought that the acting would be better. The ending even stunk. She lost her stupid boyfriend because he got sucked down by... THE SEA?!?! What is THAT?!?!

I know exactly what you mean!!
This movie absolutely stunk!
What the hell was up with Kirsten Dunst's accent? Everyone else on the island had a twang if irish... but she sounded very southern...mixed with a bad english, irish and scottish tongue! She SUCKED in this stinky, crappy film!

who needs affection when I have blind hatred?- 10 things i hate about you.

reply

My real problem with it is that the storm came out of absolutely nowhere and pulled him under--no thunder, no mild rain, nothing--just pulled him down the drain.
That, and I kinda hoped the girl on the island had jumped to end the film quickly.

reply

he was actually her husband if you want to look at it considering the fact that there is law allowing a captain to marry people on his ship, which is supposedly what happened

I thought this was a pretty decent flick, too. Nothing great, but certainly watchable.

As for the captain having the power to marry people. That might be so, but I'm not sure if he could declare HIMSELF married. But anyway, I don't think he was being entirely serious about it...

It wasn't that bad, the story I mean, but yeah, Kirsten Dunst's accent was a little too weird. Was she Scotish, Irish, British, Southern. But on the other hand, it did take place on Nova Scotia so they have a mixed accent anyways. The story was good.

reply

Amen to that! Her accent was driving me nutzo!!! I almost couldn't finish it. I agree, the story wasn't that bad... predictable.. but not bad. The curse was a little irritating. Maybe had they made it more of a thriller we wouldn't have minded the "cheese" as much. The acting killed it for me! Well, Kirsten's acting...

If I could have any job in the world I'd be a professional Cinderella.

it been a bit since I watched this movie, I was at my uncles and Me and Him agree that this movie even though it wasn't great stuck with us, I do not know how to describe the feeling but It gave me the creeps and to this day I still get the creeps thinking about the movie, just the story freaked my out

reply

James was not a Captain, he was a cadet in school, lol!

reply

i defenitly have to disagree with you there.... the plot didnt suck... it was quite good. The acting in this movie nor the movie itself truely didnt suck... it kept my interest the whole time. i thought it was great but people have certain opinions. oh well

reply

yeah this movie was kinof stupid....like the bubble was even going on???? it was so............."silly" like serioulsy i would rather watch.....mysteriouls island agsin..a.ctually no thats a lie that movie was worse...i would rather watch..who knows......well yea

reply

naming the main charakter "Silly" really was pretty stupid, I mean, what the hell....?

but the plot was really not at all bad
it was nothing too extraordinary , but it was decent and interesting and creative

not the typical Hollywood romance crap
I really liked the end (actually, all movies without a happy end get a bonus from me^^), and the last 5 minutes totally gave me the creeps too
and... predictable? I thought she would drown , not he.....

and the acting was pretty good as well, except for Claire, I didn't buy her at all, she just couldn't bring it

reply

Her name was Cecilia and Silly is a nickname of that. My daughter is named Gemma and we call her Gem. It is a play on words nothing more.

I liked this film. I remember when i watched it my two roommates left because the movie was too slow for them. I thought it was a very realistic film. I loved the cinematography and the locations they used for this movie. This film was gorgeous. I also think they chose a good cast of actors. It was a very artistic film with good character developement. I like watching films that use real locations. I feel like I'm on a little vacation without having to leave my living room. Movies with studio sets bore me to death. Lord of The Rings was amazing because they used a location and turned it into a set. This film was sorta like that.

I agree totally. :D

I'm pretty sure that this movie was supposed to take place in Newfoundland, Canada's most easterly province. This is where I am from. The accents portrayed are certainly not a Newfoundlander's accent. The director did a horrible job keeping people on track in regard to the accents. Lynn Redgrave sounded ridiculous and Scottish. Kirsten Dunst sounded Texan half the time and like a Brit with a speech impediment the other half. I was mad about the portrayl of Newfoundlanders being half wits. Like Dunst's character had never heard of Moby Dick? Come on. And why wasn't she in school?
The timing of it all was extremely messed up if it was supposed to follow any real timeline in relation to Newfoundland. The Americans put bases here in the 1940s, the clothes were from the 1920s and the moritorium on cod happened around 1993. And one more thing, people from the 'mainland' are other Canadians, not England, which is an ISLAND! ha ha, overall the movie had some serious problems and really annoyed me as a Newfoundlander. I guess that's why I never heard of it until they played it on tv a couple of days ago.

reply

That really sucks that the portrayal was so off. I did notice the Scottish accent and thought it sounded rediculous. You are right about their outfits looking ancient. I just want you to know that eventhough you thought the portrayal was so horrible I still think they made the area look beautiful and I would still love to visit.

reply

It was actually supposed to be an island off the coast of Nova Scotia not actually Newfoundland. I thought that it was supposed to be NFLD myself when I first saw it but if you look up the production blurb it states "off the coast of Nova Scotia."

That said, the movie's historicalness did still suck... Nova Scotians like myself sound nothing like Georgians (Dunst.)

reply

Moby Dick was first published in 1851. The story of Silly supposedly takes place a couple of hundred years prior to the present (according to IMDb), so not only should Silly not have heard of it, the Captain's son, who brought it up, shouldn't have heard of it either.

reply

LOL, the clothes of everyone on the island was from circa the 1920s-1940s. The clothes of James' mother specifically is from the 1940s, and we can assume that her's would be the most up-to-date since they were upper class and from the city, unlike everyone else in the island. So no, this was not a couple, meaning 200 years or more prior to the present. that would make it the 1700s and earlier.

reply

I agree this movie was horrible.the only reason i sat through it was because Daniel Bruhle occasionally popped up in the odd flashback.

reply

i just watched it online and had fallen asleep half way through. i decided to finish it just b/c i had already sat halfway through the story but i just had to fast forward. BORING
