Well. I have the DVD that is titled Dead Babies... I haven't even other types.

reply

Duh...The USA version is called "Mood Swingers" because the population would not be able to cope with the title "Dead Babies." We often have to "tone down" our films and plays for the USA where many still live by 1950s moralities and are easily offended in the modern world.

reply

After the last election, it seems that a good proportion of your countrymen are actually living somehwere in the 1650's. Burn the witch!!! Stone the blasphemer!!!

This is not nice. Many Americans are lovely people, and some of them read books and have their own breasts. If you were to blow away the *beep* who voted for Gump, you'd be blowing away Woody Allen and Morgan Freeman and Christina Ricci and Muhammad Ali as well.

So perhaps you can amend this to trekking through America, seeking out every Republican, and stabbing him or her through the throat with a sharpened screwdriver?

How's that?

reply

You know, you have a point. Sorry, but I just get so pissed off sometimes, with the stupidity of the so called "Moral Majority". But hey, as a great man once said, we all go a little crazy sometimes. Thanks for the advice about the republicans...but I have always favoured guns over knives, when dealing with bigots...its less up close. Personally, I don't want to ruin a perfectly good screwdriver by getting filthy republican blood all over it. But you are right...there are good americans...mainly the actors and celebrities, who genrally have a less bigoted world view (With the exception of people like Ah-Nuld).

reply

You really sound no better than everything you hate. Congratulations.
And all this inspired from some damn movie title. Knee-jerk anti-moralists.

someone set us up the bomb

reply

wow, you seem to have gotten way out of hand. I started this post because i wanted a dvd that said "dead babies". I am an american and tons of *beep* that goes on in this country angers me, such as censorship laws in this case. But you have way too much of a blinded view. it seems like you are only focusing on one type of american, the conservative bigot. In reality there really aren't too many of those in this country. But regardless "South Park" explained it best when they showed how this country could diplay groups with every possible point of view regardless of how the government decided to act. So no matter which group of people you decide to hate you can find that group in america, and then find some political decisions that coincide with that groups viewpoints to futher back up your opinions, even though there are many other people who dissage with the viewpoint. so overall what im trying to say is that although many times america pisses me off, you piss me off even more, so *beep* you.

It's not so much pigeon-holing americans. You guys have what, 270 million people? If just 1% are consertive bigots, warmongerers, red-necked or otherwise prejudiced, and just totally in love with themselves; then that's 2.7 million wankers we have to put up with - too many for this small website.

Do I look like Mark Brandon 'Medicare' Read?

reply

Wow. Firstly, Bush getting re-elected has nothing to do with censorship. The Media Responsibility Act that was released to combat this 'problem,' was a joint venture by Joseph Lieberman (Democrat-CT) and John McCain (Republican-AZ). Al and Tipper Gore also adamantly backed this bill. The democrats, furthermore, have made no qualms about keeping, or even widening the expanse of the program. So, obviously, your argument about resting the blame squarely (or even mostly) on the Republicans is moot.

And of course, what rant about the United States is complete without the mandatory hyperbolic Nazi Germany reference? So here we are, comparing genocide and the practice of eugenics to a re-written movie title. Why don't you just compare the Holocaust to waiting in line at the bank, for god's sake?

It is, by the way, not a very effective technique to allude to John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald in a rant condemning bigotry. The former shot Lincoln, who introduced the Emancipation Proclamation, and the latter killed Kennedy while he was in the process of completing desegregation. The least you could have done was used the John Hinckley/Ronald Reagan example, or have you simply not heard of it?

"Join the cause! Death to Outdated morals and ethics! Up with freedom of speech, thought and sexuality! Truth, love, peace, and less fat bastards telling us what to say and do!"

These values do not go hand-in-hand. How, for example, can you have both truth and freedom of speech? Freedom of speech implies freedom of distortion as well. And certainly, the freedoms of speech, thought and sexuality will not lead to peace, only independence.

One of the only coherent references in this spiel is that to the bottom-feeders known as the "Moral Majority." However, you will again find that many Democrats as well as Republicans fit into this category. Additionally, I think to call them stupid is quite high and mighty, since they can at least form cogent sentences.

One of the most laughable comments I've read on here in a while is the one about how celebrities and actors 'generally have a less bigoted world view (than the average American).' Typical citizens have to worry about health-care, feeding their children and working to keep their jobs. If they could afford to funnel millions in tax-write offs from their change purse to government based charities, they may seem a little less bitter. If they could afford a team of PR guys to be their ventriloquists, they may seem a little less bigoted. If they afford to purchase airtime to state their opinions as fact, they may seem a little less ignorant.

I hope that in the future, you will have more comprehension of your own arguments before posting.

reply

Thank you Tired and Jaded!

I just finished reading this book and happened to stumble across the movie on IMDB. I read the postings and was utterly amazed by the riduculous, misconstrued responses regarding censorship. You seem to be the only one who has any cognizance of society, politics and history as the other bloggers seem to have their heads stuck up their own asses, arguing about something they clearly haven't any comprehension of. I'm glad to see at least someone thinks before they speak. To equate something so simple as the re-working of a movie title to the abhorrent, heinous crimes of WWII is beyond insensitivity.

Remember kids, do your homework before you run your mouth off and look like an nescient fool.

reply

Thanks for your educated and well-reasoned post. I have to ask you this: why do you even bother? I can count on one hand the number of IMDB threads I've read that didn't rapidly degenerate into idiotic ranting, including a recent disturbing trend calling for the genocide of Americans.

This is why I usually go out of my way to avoid interacting with people on internet forums, except in selective situations.

I'm glad someone like you is putting idiots in their places, because I sure as heck can't be bothered.

How did the subject of hating america come up? weather ur american or british or whatever just SHUT THE FU CK UP!!! why hate its just stupid it does not solve anything in fact it makes things worse alot worse. and im not a hippie or anything not that that would be bad im just a person who thinks two many people die becasue of hate. God damn you people piss me off.

Wars a bitch so why fight it

reply

For future reference, I'm Canadian.

The subject of hating America, was, I believe, proposed around the time that a poster said "I hate America."

In the fictional event that one of these discussions turned into actual debate, however, it might be called useful. There was a time when people would participate in well-organized point-counterpoint conversations, usually to no resolution. The point is, that suddenly everyone was informed on (and hopefully sympathetic of) both sides.

Therefore, I'd conjecture that ignorance breeds hate, so keen contention would actually be less likely to induce violence. But, hey, what do I know?

As to why I bother replying to these posts...I do quite agree 99% of the discussions on this website are uninformed and that any reply will probably fall on deaf ears, or rather, small brains. A moralist would say that they debate only because to get through to those precious few would make all the difference in the world. I, however, am not a moralist, I must confess, and I do this only for a ego boost when it's taken an unrelated blow. If I must eat my time and trade my opinions for such personal validation, so be it.

reply

Still, this is possibly the stupidest post here..Besides all of my posts of course...

reply

I'd like to thank you for your concern regarding all of our time-wasting. Since your generousity clearly abounds, perhaps we could discuss terms on your sending me financial aid in addition to the excellent advice. $1,000 or so would certainly encourage me to make better use of my time.

reply

You know, an alternative title was once invented by the UK-based Australian literary critic Clive James, when writing a send-up of his friend Martin Amis (who wrote the original book): Offed Infants

reply

maybe mood swingers is a weak attempt to 'explain' the slang meaning of the term dead babies... maybe they would've been better off calling it "bummer dude" or "that's messed"... 'cause isn't that what Amis meant by the term dead babies... like john and bob are hanging out and their friend tom walks in and says *beep* john i just went by your house earlier and it was on fire"
john looks at tom in disbelief and replies *beep* off you can't be serious?"
tom says "i'm not jokin"
bob shaking his head mutters "that's dead babies man"

anyway i'm a fan of most of martin amis' stuff, especially Money. and i always come across this "mood swingers" in bargain bins and *beep* i had no idea it was based on that brilliant book. guess i'll have to rent it now.

seriously though why DO "they" have to let things degrade to political/racial/religious rants and mass forum gesticular flaming?

reply

I'm also a fan of 'Money: A Suicide Note' (full title). I suspect it's based on Amis' experiences writing Saturn 3, with Kirk Douglas as Lorne Guyland (demanding more nude scenes) and Farrah Fawcett as Butch Beausoleil.

reply

Well, i still havent found a dvd called "dead babies" in america, but every few months i remember that i want one.

reply

That's very likely the case, as "dead babies" is a phrase that means nothing more to us Americans than, dead babies. "Mood Swingers", while far less provocative, gives far more perspective on the film (excepting for its strange ending).

I always find it funny that though Americans speak a language derived from English, the differences are large enough that translators are sometimes necessary.

Though, I don't recommend you renting this movie. It's one of the most incoherent things I've ever seen, and even as a comment on drug-induced decadence, it falls short. In the end, I was left with nothing but questions that address major faults and inconsistencies of the movie, wondering why I stayed up to watch it on Showtime when I could have simply gone to sleep.

reply

Okay everyone: It's time for a massive apology.
I've just gone back and reread my posts and I CANNOT BELEIVE the stupid Sh*T I was saying. I came off like an internet troll at best, a raging psychopath at worst. I was really in a bad mood at that point in time, I was drinking a lot, and my favourtie past time was posting rubbish on forums. And censorship has always sparked me off so I just lost my temper. To clarify: I do not commit, or condone acts of violence against ANYONE be they american or whatever. I have nothing against americans, whether they voted for Bush or not. I will admit that I think Dubya is a moron, but I don't wish him any harm. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, political or otherwise. That's why it's called the land of the free, right?
I also said that I "Prefer" guns. I really DO NOT know what I was on when I wrote that, as I've been a life long gun HATER. If it were up to me, there'd be no guns or weapons in the world. I'm a pacifist, so reading the crap I wrote in that post makes me frankly, feel ill. Like I said, I was drunk and annoyed...I REALLY didn't mean any of it. If I offended ANY fellow posters or people reading the posts, I can only offer my heart felt apologies. That kind of behavious isn't acceptable in the internet OR real life. If people want to call the film Mood Swingers or whatever, I don't care. All I care about is that I make it clear to everyone reading that I didn't mean the things I wrote and that I am unbeleivably sorry for it. I promise to be a much more polite and reasonable poster, and less of a brain dead troll.

reply

I've got to say that though I was offended by your rant earlier (which was bigoted in its own right), I sincerely appreciate this apology. So rarely do Internet posters (which tend to be the worst in every country) actually admit flaws that when someone does, it's meaningful. So, thank you.

And yes, we very much are "free" because differing opinions are allowed and never punished by the government unless these "opinions" drift towards inciting violence (which is why anti-semetic protesters here hold signs saying KILL ALL JUICE instead of JEWS).

As an aside, just to set the record straight, censorship in the US usually doesn't mean that certain material cannot come into this country but rather that offensive material is given a rating that designates it as intended only for adult audiences and is often only stored where only adult material can be located. Most companies choose to self censor in order to reach a wider audience, but that's more the fault of a desire to succeed in a capitalistic society than government interference.

reply

You apologize for being an ass (which I accept btw :) ) but then you go off hating on guns, just because you're a pacifist? I think more than not you should not post while DRUNK! I am a law abiding gun owner who despises people who think so 'simply' about the many complex things in this world. The world is not simple. People should not be generalized about, (nor should countries), but being that your mea culpa is 3 yrs old now, I figure you've either learned your lesson or moved on. :) Cheers.

"This is a stupid thread, whether it be American or British."

Exactly. It was started by some kid who admittedly just wants to purchase something to impress their friends. Whoa, Dead Babies? You're hardcore! I really can't stand people who love potentially offensive material just for the fact that it may be seen by some as controversial. Super cool, buddy.

reply

I have apologised and you're right. I was being a stupid kid at the time. I just wanted to make it clear that I didn't mean the crap I posted. I'm sorry I started this whole thing and it won't happen again guys.

I must apologise on behalf of IMDB contributors everywhere, to the original poster, Jeff-255 for all the really STUPID posts that arose from his innocuous query. Especially the America bashing guy, but responding to that guy is a waste of air. Anyway, I am with the original poster, I would LOVE to have a DVD titled Dead Babies just because it is so weird and irreverent and would definitely be a 'conversation starter'. I always roll my eyes when people start bashing America when ANYTHING is changed, and start going crazy on the 'morality' rampage. Titles changes like this have NOTHING to do with censorship, but stupid people always spout that tirade ad nauseum. It has EVERYTHING to do with marketing. "Dead Babies" regardless of whether jeff-255 and I love it or not, is marketing DEATH on any buy list and I'm sure the distributor wanted people to see the film (whether it is good or bad) on it's merits and not be put off by the title. If I were the American Distributor, I'd sure as hell change the title from "Dead Babies" if I wanted to make as much money as I could from it. If it were a really cutting edge horror movie, I would keep it, but it is confusing, and THAT'S the reason why the title was changed.
