Why did Beau Durn shoot the young guy?

I thought he was supposed to shoot the tom selleck character, rafe covington when he saw the gang out there on the ranch. Instead he shot the young friend of rafe. WTF was that all about?

I can understand by your handle why you wouldn't "get it". He shot the young friend to enrage Rafe and draw him into town where he could try and ambush him...

BTW..Terrorezza H. Kerry belongs in a freekin asylum.

LOL chargermyke. My sentiments exactly.

There's no need for name-calling ... but, anyway, it was done for the reason stated, to surprise the audience and just to show how evil the character was (shooting a young innocent just for the hell of it basically) to both the protagonist and to the audience.

It's also possible that Beau wanted to wittle Covington's gang down a bit, and Kane was the first one he ran across.

Kane is fit!!!

Right, I was going to say the same thing. I thought the ending of the movie was poor in many respects, like the poorly directed shootouts and the Mark Harmon character going crazy.

The main reason Durn didn't shoot Selleck is that they wanted to extend the movie into the planned timespan. And it was very dramatic/surprising that Durn was firing at the kid, not Selleck; I give them high marks for that.

And yes, everyone in the world though Durn should have hung around and shot others who gathered at the kid's body.

While I am at it, another complaint is that the guys should start spending mucho time and work and days building up the ranch, while Selleck didn't tell the girl anything -- that he was working at the ranch, why he was doing it, that it had oil, etc. And you'd think Selleck would ask the girl what her current plans were for the ranch, like if she wasn't ridding herself of it,

Google Tom Horn. That scene is directly out of the history books.

Thank you I was just about to post this.
