Not taking anything from "The Wrestler" (2008).
but this was clearly the inspiration.

I thoroughly enjoyed both films.

This is just a point.

This is a documentary, the Wrestler is not.

I guess you can say its a adaptation of the documentary into a feature length film. Not really, but kinda.

I was thinking of Beyond The Mat the entire time while watching through The Wrestler. It was definitely inspired by this.

Darren Aronofsky purportedly gave a copy of this documentary to Robert D. Siegel, the screenwriter of "The Wrestler" as inspiration.

The documentary? I heard he gave a Hummer for the rights to the documentary. Not sure if it was the car though.

I liked "The Wrestler" a lot but also like many of you I also thought it was based in this documentary. Glad to see I'm not alone.

You're right, I should have written "inspired by" instead of "based on", my mistake. Sorry, English is not my first language but you learn something new everyday.
