This movie killed WCW

The publicity for this movie (having David Arquette win the real WCW world heavyweight title to promote the movie) was a big factor in the death of WCW. David Arquette even admitted he thought it was a stupid idea.

reply

This movie didn't kil WCW, WCW killed WCW. Ted Turner hired people who were complete dumbasses when it comes to wrestling, they had no idea how to do good wrestling. And what was Ted Turner thinkinganyway, he knows nothing about wrestling, it was doomed from the start.

I agree with jwatkins and also think the movie had a part in killing WCW. It certainly wasnt a smart move.

WCW had legendary wrestlers like Golberg, hogan, sting. But also spectacular wrestlers like rey mysterio, Billy kidman, konan and many other cruiserweights.
They had also more real wrestlers who came from the amateurs (altough i mostly hated them, they made WCW more believable).

WWE is just for show, the wrestling is just secondary for them.

reply

There are no "real" wrestlers, its fake and has always been fake. It was even fake 50 years ago.

they had no idea how to do good wrestling.

This movie didn't kill WCW. Dumb decisions by this big backstage guy (can't remember his name, but it wasn't Bischoff) killed WCW. Flair even admits it in his book.

reply

(coughs)Vince Russo

reply

You can blame it on Bischoff, Hogan, Russo, this film, or anything else. Personally, I think it's because the company that bought out the company, and (I believe) the Turner network, just didn't want a wrestling show. Bischoff was apparently close to buying WCW, but the deal apparently didn't include a TV time slot. Fair enough, since WCW was losing money, but I think Bischoff could have saved it, alas, it was not to be. Damn I miss WCW...

As for the Arquette thing, I think it was actually a mistake, but they had to work with it. Not sure where I heard that, but I remember hearing it was a botched finish. Also, the movie rocked, I'm watching it now for about the hundredth time, reminds me of the days when WCW was around *sniff*

reply

Nah dude Vince Russo had Arquette win it for the movie to push more people into seeing it..like Cena winning the title right before his movie comes out..so like MTV or else where can announce "World Champion (insert name here) stars in (insert movie here)."

reply

Cena won the championship not because of the Marine coming out. He won the title because he got the belt from the ladder at Unforgiven. He's a better wrestler than Edge and he won the title.
WCW was run to the ground by a combination of Kevin Nash, Hogan, Russo, and Bichoff.

reply

I blame Russo/AOL/Time Warner, Russo wasn't the wrestling genius he said he was, he was a writer who had his stuff edited by Vince McMahon in WWE. In WCW, he didn't have a McMahon telling him how to improve his crappy ideas. Also, Ted Turner is not to blame as AOL/Time Warner bought Turner Broadcasting and AOL/Time Warner didn't want WCW and they didn't care or knew how to run it. Ted Turner was not in control so turner is not to blame. So WCW became what is was in the early nighties, a mismanaged company, its stars walked out on them and the new WWF Attitude was stronger so WCW didn't have a chance once Russo and AOL/Time Warner came in.

No one has the right to say a movie sucks if they haven't seen Superman IV!

reply

Cena is better then Edge? LMAO, Cena and his 5 moves are better then edge? That just cracked me up.

reply

I doubt Bishoff could have saved it....especially since it was a good chunk part of his fault that it got into the crappy horrendous shape it was near the end.

examples:

(A good chunk of which involves the NWO)

NWO basically never losing and rarely if ever putting over the younger talent, when it should have been the younger talent winning the majority of matches and the NWO old geezers losing most of them seeing as they have had their chance in the light.

The NWO going from a dangerous butt-kicking small group of guys....to the point that there wasn't anyone who worked in WCW who wasn't a NWO member...including idiocy such as referees, commentators, etc.

The NWO B-team(red n' black)

The mere idea that someone decided that NWO should have it's own show.

NWO Sting

The inclusion of wrestlers into the NWO....when it made no sense.

Storylines continually getting dropped right in the middle of the story, simply because writers got bored with the storyline or couldn't think of a way to properly end it.

Who hit and run Hulk Hogan in a black Humvee storyline.......

Who hit and run Hulk Hogan in a WHITE Humvee storyline--same exact storyline as above but halfway through the vehicle changed color without any explanation.......

And that's just a little bit of what helped kill WCW...........

WCW was brought down by the WWE (WWF as it was called at the time?). This movie had nothing to do with WCWs death. Vince got a little 2 greedy and Time Warner wanted wrestling off their show list...makes no sense cus i do believe that WCW Monday Night Nitro beat WWFs RAW 88 weeks straight.
A key dissapointment for me was when Goldberg left the scene.

reply

To to the who said Cena beat Edge to win the belt because he's a better wrestler...I agree, because, you know, WWE is 100% real and the better wrestler always wins.

reply

lol. classic

reply

[SARCASM]Yeah, the better wrestler always wins. It's always been 100% real.[/SARCASM]

reply

it did beat it for over a year in ratings (84 weeks), but that wasn't right as it was getting dropped. by the time the end was rolling around, they hadn't won the ratings war in somewhere around two years. the show went down in quality, and people started tuning in to wwf (as it was called then). it definitely was successful at one point, but was barely hanging on close to the end.

reply

Having an actor win the top championship in WCW wasn't the smartest of business decisions and I don't think it generated that much publicity for the movie anyway.I wouldn't go so far to say it's what caused WCW's decline. A combination of factors, inflated salaries of top wrestlers became financial burdens, management indecisions, changing the booking team on a number of ocassions, no real direction to the company after Eric Bischoff left the first time and what really was the end for WCW was Nitro being cancelled from TNT and Thunder cancelled from TBS by Jamie Kellner who took over Turner Broadcasting after the AOL/Time Warner merger.

reply

how can anybody even call cena a wrestler, and a better wrestler then edge at that. cena has no skill in the ring he's a piece of *beep*

reply

I agree Cena has no skills.

reply

this movie didnt kill WCW at all, it was, as someone earlier mentioned, Russo/AOL/Time Warner. Russo couldn't write his ABC's, let alone decent storylines. The Arquette thing, well it was dumb, but i had already seen the movie and loved it, so it didnt effect me much, i do remember kanyon getting thrown off the triple cage and being interviewed the following week on Nitro, he was in a neckbrace, but you could obviously see it was fake, since he kept moving his head. AOL/Time Warner wanted WCW out of the picture, and didn't care what happened afterwords. It's sad such a legacy of good stories and wrestling had to die so soon. The b*st*rds at WWE make pro wrestling a disgrace. Thank god for TNA, granted its not at the level that WCW was, but it has the potential. Whoever said TNA sucks has tunnel vision. Granted the mic skills are lacking, but then again if you're tuning in for mic skills, stick to the morans at WWE
I hope Vince gets whats comin to em, and WWE goes out of business. O HAPPY DAY.
TNA is the future, and WCW will be sorely missed, but it is fun to see the old days with this movie, granted its one of my top ten movies of all time!

reply

That may be the case, but we all know this movie killed itself. How can this movie, of all movies ever made, make your top ten?

Could it be because you have seen ten movies?

It's not because I hate comedies, it's because you like bad ones.

Real comedies come in the shape of Little Miss Sunshine, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Thank You for Smoking.

reply

peak, u are going to have to realize one day that people dont look at movies exactly the same way as everyone else. dont be slamming me because i like this movie. not everyone is going to drool over ferris bueler and thank you for smoking (altho ferris bueler IS in my top ten and i enjoyed thank you for smoking quite a bit). my point is, stop attacking me because i enjoy a film that ISNT like a little miss sunshine, that isnt like the great comedies of our time, THATS THE POINT. you like movies your way, i like them mine, and just because 432938237 votes say a movie sucks on here or rotten tomatoes doesnt mean right away that i have to hate it too. this movie has a place in my top movies because it has major nostolgic humor, dumb jokes, and is a movie that me and my dad quote almost EVERYDAY. your academy and your french foreign leigon or whoever the hell runs the golden globes is not what i base my opinion of a film on. now im not saying that you do either, i know that all the movies that you critique you watch all the way through, so dont get the impression that im saying you like a movie because the academy likes it. its just that you and them seem to have a similar taste in film. thats completely fine, im just saying that a film doesnt have to have every critic making love to himself or herself over a movie for me to say, you know what i like that movie. why do you think rocky horror has a cult following, why does quinten tarrinteno owns the 16mm film of 'Manos' The Hands of Fate, why did a movie like planet of the apes get such a good reception, the list goes on. a movie is what people want a movie to be, and that is something everyone needs to understand.

NO SPRINGS!!!

I don't care if this movie destroyed wcw. I like it.

reply

It was stupid. Watch the ride and fall they even blantantly say it was stupid descisions that killed WCW.

reply

I think they should hire fans. I've heard better ideas from fans than I've seen on TV. I think Smackdown's dying because of, not only the crappy timeslot, but the superstars. Not too long ago, superstars like Booker T and JBL were headlining Smackdown. Remember when Smackdown was comparable to Raw. That's when it had Big Show, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, RVD, and a lot of great cruiserweights. I think Batista's boring, but that's just me. Very bad writing comes into play as well. WWE would gain back SOOOOO many fans if they brought back the Hardcore Championship. I always loved hardcore matches on Raw. Anything goes, falls count anywhere, 24/7 Hardcore Matches. Loved them. All in all, I still love watching Raw. HBK going for the WWE championship at Wrestlemania is so awesome. He's been my favorite wrestler since I was 4. Since I started watching wrestling. I miss HHH though. Hoping he comes back soon. Of course I also miss the rest of DX. Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, X-Pac, and Chyna. Stone Cold and The Rock need to stay out of the WWE. If they don't plan on coming back and staying for awhile, then they can just not come back at all. I hate short comebacks. Marty Jennety. I was saddened.

reply

You still have to admit the triple cage match between Arquette, Jarrett, and whoever the third guy was was pretty freakin' sweet! Until the end where it looked like the guy was dead after taking a 25 foot fall...

On the next Arrested Development...

reply

I think the thrid guy was DDP. This movie didn't kill WCW, but it was definitely further proof of what WCW was doing to kill itself. Putting the WCW title on David Arquette wasn't anymore ludicrous than putting the WWF title on Vince McMahon which happened prior to this. Having a dozen or so guys call their own shots, burying the guys with talent, and riding a horse until it dies were the reasons WCW failed. WWF has Vince and when it comes down to it, what he says goes. WCW had a different structure and had too many primadonnas wanting to put themselves over. So you had 6 or 7 titles all changing hands every other week. Then when they have this amazing cruiserweight division, we get 20 minutes matches of Lex Luger and Hulk Hogan rolling around, and guys like Chris Jericho and Billy Kidman get next to no on-screen time. The potential was there, the control wasn't and that's what did them in.

reply

Yeah, you're definitely right. I really wish McMahon would stop writing himself into every show so much...

Or bring back nWo and have nWo vs. DX to finally end the argument once and for all!

I am responding to those calling wrestlers and wrestling "Fake"

Fake is not the right word for wrestling. "Staged" or "Fixed" is the right word.

Let me tell you guys something, I have gone through 6 years of football, 4 years of amateur wrestling, one year of Iraq, 6 years alone in the Army. I went to an NWA training camp and I'll tell you what I have NEVER felt so beaten up, and so sore in my life. There is nothing FAKE about gravity, getting slammed on your back, being thrown out of the ring, getting locked up. THATS ALL real. Yes it's a dance, it's for show, but really this is the hardest form of entertainment. To make it in this business you have to be both a charismatic actor, and get your ass kicked on a daily basis.

It sucks that wrestling doesn't get the respect it should, everyone thinks of acting as a craft, and are praised. But wrestlers, they are only phonies, their sacrifices for entertainment go disrespected.
