Makes no sense. *spoiler warning*

This movie doesn't make a lot of sense and has many glaring errors. I just finished watching it for the first time after hearing so many good things about it on here.

1) It doesn't explain why that girl was a psycho killer. I know she said she hates all living things, but still....

2) I've heard of destructive behaviors before, but eating oneself is ridiculous.

3) Why would you perform your initial test of a drug on 3 people who have no clue that they're getting it or understand why they're feeling this way? What kind of scientist is that? I know he's only 17 but you don't have to have a Doctorate to understand ethics.

The only character that made any sense to me, other than the mother, was the girl who was sticking herself with stuff. Self mutilation occurs all the time, though not quite to that degree. Also, why did he try to hook up with his mom? None of this was ever explained.

I also had some problems with some general errors in the movie. One of the worst, in my opinion, is that the girl obsessed with food deep fried her hand and ate her finger, yet when she has that scene where she cuts parts off of her body her hand is miraculously intact. Same goes for Eiji. The girl slits his throat yet when he's laying on the ground he has some blood on him but they didn't even attempt a prosthetic for a fake slit throat. For the amount of arterial spray, he'd be spread wide open. Another thing that could be just a minor inconsistency is that the time on his video never matched up with the outside of his camera (the led display). I assume the part where he's videotaping that girl killing his mother is a dream sequence, but Eiji is holding the camera and they show the activity through the lens but the video isn't recording. These were just some of my gripes. I was just upset for wasting an hour and 20 minutes so I wanted to vent. If you have any answers, please let me know.

I thought the girl who was a psycho killer made sense mostly, but it was the girl who ate herself that lost me. If her greatest pleasure was eating, then her greatest pain would be "not eating" so wouldn't she take the most pleasure out of starving herself? I guess the director just had the image of someone eating their own eyeball and that was the closest he could come to rationalizing it haha. Anyways this movie actually made my stomach churn which is rare... but it was oddly watchable.

I've watched it and after much consideration i think i've come up with an answer for at least a few of the questions.
the main thing being..

The CACTUS IS PURE EVIL!!

That girl Rika spends so much time tied into the cactus with that VR thing (i found her weirder than the other two.. i mean maybe its just me but eating urself seems a lot more rational than exploring virtual reality with a cactus)that the cactus slowly poisons her mind against ppl and tells her to kill them..
i dunno maybe i'm just goin out on a limb here..

This might be why we always see cactus images before rika kills ppl.. i mean it kinda was the background and foreground to boot during the sex scene.

LOL
ugly way of saying, but well, I also think that although a few of the guys comments are valid, most simply show that they didnt understand well the movie.

You are trying to make sense out of a film, that presents itself as little more than shock value. This probaly would be what one might consider a B-movie. When you see a film like this, you really shouldn't be expecting something Oscar-worthy.

It's naked Japanese girls, blood and gore. That's basically all it's claiming to present. They did a decent job of trying to put a semblance of a storyline in there. However, it's like do you expect a good plot from a porno film?

I agree w/ everyone that this is largely senseless, but:

1) re why Rika was a psycho killer--his mother, in the experiment, found that she was full of endorphin. Maybe that she had so much joyous energy (endorphin) meant that she became evil when she was shot up.

2) you've got a good point re eating yourself. Pain made both the aerobics queen and cook feel good. But figuring out the logic of that is worse than taking the LSAT.

3) the mother/scientist said that this was the final trial--which I suppose explains why it was given to just three people. The braniac kid was the unethical one (right)?

By the way: gotta love the last scene where she's riding away, spraying plants w/ MYSON.

Thank you!! Lol
Although a few small things annoy me, (like the op's grip about the chicken-fried hand... It should have been mutilated in later scenes and the neck). Just simple continuity. Other than that you are trying to put logic and reality into a movie! A Japanese gore/horror movie at that!

it's not a B-movie at all, it's an arthouse movie. "Oscar worthy" isn't really a compliment unless you like heavy handed middle brow mediocrity.

I agree with the virtual reality cactus. He is right. This is a beautiful film, even if it doesnt make much sense. Thats the problem with you humans. Always trying to find meaning in everything.

aaaaaand the Doctor wins this round!!!!

wow, someone else who doesn't bother to think sub textually about a film and instead resorts to meaningless perceived plot inconsistencies (a few of which are meaningless in the context of absurdist film) because they're too intellectually deprived to see beyond face value
