i am so glad i didnt watch this before going to university

i would have been so worried otherwise! it makes college look like the moat stressful and downright awful experience ever

reply

I haven't gone to college yet, but for me it doesn't look that bad.
Probably it might be stressful, and I don't think that it looks awful. It's like in high-school movies, they make look like losers have a very bad time, and in my school that's not like that

reply

it does make it seem like you need a ton of money :/

it's not like that everywhere, but nyc is very expensive

I'm assuming none of you go to NYU. I graduated from NYU in 2002, and some of the things that Paul goes through and some of the people he meets are spot on. One of the hardest things abotu life at NYU is that it's a school without a real campus, and there is no real sense of community amongst the students there. So if you're not in a solid group of friends straight away, it's one of the loneliest places to be. You definitely see paul going through that throughout most of the mov.

My freshman year roomates at Rubin hall were not too far off from the roomates in this movie. They weren't as evil, but they were heavily into drugs, and obviously didn't give a crap about me and made no effort whatsoever to get to know me. The biggest problem is that if you have roomates like that your freshman year, the majority of people you meet through your roomates are people just like them, and it doesn't help the situation at all.

So despite this movie being a little over the top, it does capture one of the downsides to life and the culture at NYU.

It was not realistic that Paul is the only one of his roommates that is from the midwest, and the rest are native New Yorkers. AT NYU, most students come from all over the USA. Paul was singled out in this movie as an oddball that doesn't fit in with the fast talking east coast New Yorkers. Why is he the only one that is different? In college and at State universities, as well as private ones, students come from all walks of life. Everyone is different. Not just Paul. He could have easily been put in a room full of Nebraskaners, and a New Yorker would have been the oddball instead of Paul.

My advice to college freshmen who end with roommates that they know they are never going to be friends with and don't even enjoy spending time with them, is get out as quickly as you can, go to the halls of residence administration and ask to be moved. It may sound babyish but swallow your pride because it's better than living around people you have nothing in common with. Don't let it get in the way of your studying.

I agree, and there is nothing babyish about it. College is very expensive and very hard, and you don't need a bunch of jerks around you making it more difficult.

I haven't seen the entire movie but a very large number of NYU students are from NYC. It would make sense that a group of friends from the same high school would room together freshman year--if you were a student there you would recognize the richer-than-thou students into drugs. In fact, most students come from the surrounding area of New Jersey, upstate New York, or Long Island (many of whom are rich). Considering that Paul never talks to anyone I doubt he would find anyone from the same area as him-being disconnected from your fellow students is very possible, especially at NYU. I mean come on, a room full of Nebraskaners? Have you been to NYU...?

For some reason this actually made me look forward to college and NY (though I didn't go to college IN NY, but I might go to grad school there). My roomate freshman year is actually one of my best friends now (we both just graduated last year).

Only the shell, the perishable passes away. The spirit is without end. Eternal. Deathless.

In some ways it is really close to the real experience of being in the dorms with new roomates...but the movie makes out most people to be total *beep* really aren't all that mean in real life.

LOL! You're lucky, then! I saw this during college and it made me even more depressed.

I'm 16k in debt now and I regret all three years I spent in college. The education was okay but that is IT!

I had no friends. I had no job and thus I had no money. I ate alone at lunch. I spent all week at college. I got made fun of cause I didn't party, drink, do drugs, or hang out with my classmates after class at bars. I had teachers who hated me for no apparent reason. I had to take out loans to take classes or eat because I had to go through my parent's income which was crap cause they filed for bankruptcy before I turned 18 and thus no financial aid. The only real fun I had in college was being with my current fiancee. Other than that, I felt like crying my eyes out every day! I was so depressed! :/

Sorry you had such a lousy experience.

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

reply

It's okay! ^_^

If nothing else, it made me a tougher person..

Thank you for your concern, though! :)

I'm sorry to hear you had a tough time in College but it's good that you found your fiancé there, so there is an upside. New environments can be tough and isn't easy for everyone, sometimes you're just dealt with bad luck.
