Jason and the Argonauts - classic, superb movie

I've just been reading some of the posts about the 60's Jason and the Argonauts. I must admit I'm a bit shocked that most of the comments are negative. I can't believe that this could be the case. This movie shaped my life when I was eight yrs old. The concept that humans are just chess pieces to be moved around at the whim of the Gods. The bit where Neptune rises up out the Ocean to part the Clashing Rocks. And, the truly amazing scene when 2 of Jason's crew plunder the tomb of Thalos. When that great big iron statue creaks and turns his torso and then climbs off the plinth! I swear, I've been terrified of shop window dummies ever since. Where do you think the clowns in Stephen King movies, Chuckie Terminator come from!! One of the best movies of all time

I wouldn't say this is the one of the best movies of all times, it is good fun but far from the "best movie".

What I find unimaginably hard to fathom is how this can be an American production (if it is not the Universe makes sense again). They got the names right, basic facts right (up to a point anyway), no "raping" of the actual mythology behind it. For that alone it IS my favorite "sword and sandal" movie. I was sick with the "raping" of Homer's Iliad in Troy (I won't even comment the abomination that was "Helen of Troy"), it was quite refreshing to see an English speaking movie that actually tries to RESPECT a mythology that is not of their own origin. Let's hope there will be another in our lifetime (doubtful but hope dies last ;>)

You do realize that you are on the boards for the 2000 remake don't you? This is not the Ray Harryhausen masterpiece, this is the made for TV atrocity that doesn't even deserve to share the same name!

I know - I realised my mistake soon after but couldn't delete message. I was mortified and said that it would come back to haunt me - a mate said not to worry as no-one reads these things - how wrong she was.

I was gonna say, ' ARE YOU ON DRUGS???" till I read your disclaimer;)

Harryhausen's 'Jason and the Argonauts' is a classic of Adventure/Fantasy films. I would call it one of the most important films of all time, 2nd only to King Kong I can't think of a more iconic use of stop-motion.

This TV-Movie is a waste of time a cash in on a popular name, I don't know why when there are so many Greek/Roman myths to chose from they had to re-hash this name, infact not just Greek how about Norse or Celtic?

Look, I got it wrong. When I was raving about how good the Jason and the Argonauts movie was - I didn't realise that this topic was about the 2000 one. I thought it was about the original Harry H's one - and I think that was fab. This has come back to bite me time and time again. so, for all future records - the first Jason and the Argonauts movie is brilliant. the TV series type movie is *beep*

Apparantly I'm not allowed to post anything for a while cos I used the word 'beep'. But, the made for TV Jason and the Argonauts really is 'beep'

I'm not usually one to make gross, sweeping generalizations — but, here, I absolutely must. Apparently all of the users of IMDb are total and utter snobs. I grew up with this movie (as well as the 1997 miniseries adaptation of The Odyssey). The 1963 version is good, but doesn't hold a candle to the 2000 one! You people refuse to acknowledge the superior adaptation because you're all nose-in-the-air purists. Everyone always insists the original versions of a film are better simply because they came first. Sometimes this is the case, sometimes it isn't. Another perfect example would be 1954 Sabrina and the 1995 Sabrina. I'm sorry, but the '95 Sabrina is much better than the original. Bogie is one of my all time favorite actors, but it just wasn't a good role for him (he was too old for the part as well). Harrison Ford was far better suited to it. I will give the '60s version the advantage of the Talos scene, though.
