Amsterdam was right in the end they were nobody in the grand scheme of things eventually they were forgotten by time and life went on. Even the most famous people right now will eventually be forgotten.
shareI had a different interpretation. The final shot of the story, after the progression of New York through decades of evolution and construction, shows the World Trade Center, whose destruction was still fresh in our minds when this film came out. Scorsese could have continued on and shown the skyline without it, which would have validated Amsterdam's belief. But instead, he chose to end with the WTC, which I interpreted to mean that he was demonstrating Amsterdam to be wrong, that no, we won't be forgotten.
shareThe two main characters would easily be forgotten sure. Most regular folk fade out of the collective memory after two to three generations, even more so with today's highly distracted culture. But with the ending scene we're shown the Twin Towers in the back drop and I think the story of that will remain in the collective conscious for centuries to come unless the earth is destroyed

Unless you are someone that contributed something extremely significant or life changing to the world, you will most likely be forgotten by the world. Those who will remember you are your closest family and friends but they will also die off.
The ending to me, was sad and powerful.
