high school english teacher w/ a question

i just completed reading this novel with my class...and as always they have asked if there is a film to accompany the text. does this movie have any relavacy for the classroom, or is it merely a pop culture reference to the book?

reply

You should read the user review on the page. H e says its about a guy who wants to meet JD Salinger, pretty much...

reply

No. I think if you're looking for a film to accompany the novel, "Igby Goes Down" is a much better film that is loosely based on "The Catcher in the Rye" and much more well done.

"I don't know about what happened. . . because once you start writing, it all becomes fiction."

funny. tell the students to think about the text. holden abhors movies. therefore, i think it would be rare for salinger to distribute the rights to make a movie. that would be hypocritical, and we know how holden feels about phonies.

there really is no film adaptation of the book. there are a few that loosely follow it, but no real film. like someone said, "igby goes down" is probably the closest you'd find. i'd suggest not showing one at all. it's the way salinger would have it.
