Starcraft quotes from movies?

Everybody knows when you click on a unit you get a certain line or sound they make.
A few years ago I noticed that lines of the Terran dropship "hang on, we're in for some chops" and "semper fi, bye bye (?)" were the ones used by the dropship pilot from the James Cameron movie 'Aliens'. (when they reach the colony)
Blizzard just copied the line and the original voice for their game.

Anyone else noticed if there are lines from the game which are taken from a movie?

reply

Its been maybe 2 or three years since I last played Starcraft, and about 15 minutes since I last watched 'Aliens'. Here's what I remember:

Dropship Pilot: "In the pipe, 5 5 5" is what I think she says, and its a direct line from the same character in aliens. She also says "we're in for some chop", which is a line from the Aliens character too.

If I remember correctly, when you clicked on the marine enough times he said "how do i get out of this *beep* outfit?" which is also a quote from Aliens.

Other references include, in one of the early levels in Starcraft, there's a sign that says "Welcome to Mar Sara" or something along those lines and it has spray painted over it the words "Shake and bake" this is a twofold reference to aliens.

1) The sign for the Hadley's Hope colony in Aliens is graffitied with the phrase "Have a nice day"

2) The colonial administrator refers to the colony as a "shake and bake" colony.

I think there might be more references than that, but to be honest I'm suprised that I even remember that many.

Yeah, there are Aliens references all over the place...practically all of the dropship pilot's lines are from that movie (plus, she looks nearly identical). The line is "In the pipe five by five" I believe.

There also is a fun reference to RoboCop if you click on the Dragoon enough times. He says "put down your weapon...you have fifteen seconds to comply" which is what the big killer robot says when it is threatened in the board meeting during its debut.

The science vessel also sounds like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons and says "D'oh!" and "Excellent," and I think the firebat might reference King of the Hill, though I'm not sure.

What do I look like... an orc? This is not Warcraft in space... It's much more sophisticated.

reply

Well the Science Vessel dude was the guy whom did the voice for Burns.

"I'm gonna get medival on your ass!"

reply

I just looked at the voice cast. Harry Shearer! No way!

Mar Sara is also a reference to the Human base on Mars (Mars Sara) which is attacked by the Zentradi in the Robotech series.

reply

The terran firebat says "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" (I think that's what he says, never played starcraft in 3 years) from Apocalypse Now.

Goliaths look like that robot from Robocop

"I'm gonna get medival on your ass!"

reply

ED 209! Is the robot from Robocop 2/3 called. And Protos dragoons says: "You have 15 seconds to comply", as does ED 209

reply

I think the Terran Ghost sounds awfully like Clint Eastwood from the Dirty Harry series.. correct me if I'm wrong though.

reply

Yep ;D And also, quite off-topic but Sam Fisher looks awfully much like Ghosts.

"I'm gonna get medival on your ass!"

As well as a line from the blacksmith, also from Diablo. When you are on the quest for some magical giant mushroom, he hollers out "It sounds like a huge, gargantuan, swollen, bloated mushroom!"

"I have an easier time believing that Paris Hilton is a virgin."

reply

Also, when you click on an Archon a few times, it says something like "it's beautiful" and "they should have sent a poet" which is a reference to the movie Contact (with Jodie Foster).

Why buy a cow when you can have sex for free? (Mallrats)

reply

I'm amazed nobody mentioned this:

"He's dead, Jim."
-Terran Medic

If you're so clueless as to not know, Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy from Star Trek says that to Captain Kirk when talking about a dead person.

"The War...has begun." -Kukua Oherron, Chronicles of Light (2006)

reply

If you click the archon a bunch it says,"power overwhelming," which is a cheat from the game that makes your units and buildings invincible. When you click the corsair a bunch, or when it is completed at the stargate, I don't remember, it says,"it is a good day to die" which is a cheat from Warcraft II, also made from blizzard, that makes your units and buildings invincible.

I also thought it was the goliath that copied the ED robot from Robocop.

The firebat does reference Hank Hill. He asks, "Do you have any questions about propane?" *click again* "or propane accessories?"

The wraith pilot says, when clicked repeatedly:"I'm just curious. Why am I so good?" which references Maverick (Tom Cruise) from Top Gun, I think. Also, "Man, I've got to get me one of these," which is what Captain Hiller (Will Smith) says on Independence Day.

reply

Actually it's "State the nature of your medical emergency."

“Can they do c-sections?” “Can you?” “I'm not the one who's not offering the refund, now am I?”

reply

I dont really get the point of this topic. OK, the game has some (accidentally) familiar quotes from aliens. So what. Have you played game on internet?
Have you had the fun of joking while losing???
OMG, start playing this game, than say it sux. I thought Warcraft sux, but its an excellent game...

nobody is saying it sucks... I for one have played the game on Battle.Net alot. And the "accidental" quotes you are talking about were obviously placed there on purpose.

There is another reference in regards to the Firebat, though a bit more obscure. In StarEdit(Campaign Editor) there is a Hero Firebat called Gui Montag, named after the firefighter in Bradbury's excellent Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag. Of course, there is a movie based on the book as well, so it fits here.

Wraiths also have quotes from Peanuts, in particular, I recall "Everybody's gotta die sometime, Red" (Referencing the Snoopy talking about the Red Baron.

There may be other references to Peanuts, too. I don't recall.
