A piss poor excuse for a game....

(before reading this, please know that I exclude RE:4 from almost all of what is written below, that was a nice game)

I really don’t understand how resident evil games are so popular. After playing RE:CV for nearly 5 hours, I not once experienced any sort of pleasure, shock, excitement or.... well fun.
The story line (as with most games) was totally forgettable, the clichéd cut scenes were laughably bad, and the 'acting' wouldn’t even compete with a school production. But all this can be forgiven, I'm not too bothered about that, that's what movies are for. All I want is a game can hold its own when it comes down to gameplay, this is where RE:CV really fails to impress. From its grossly un-intuitive control system, clumsy combat, and the most unhelpful camera angles of recent times, to its monotonous 'puzzles', tedious backtracking, and those bloody creaking doors! Fine, when the first RE game came out, maybe even the second: some of these faults would have been acceptable, but to have all these in one game, in this day and age, is just unacceptable. It's just a melting pot of bad ideas, lazy programming, and an out-dated idea of what a game should be. I understand that this game is over 6 years old, but that's no excuse.
I'm sure I have offended many RE zealots in this post, but it's not my fault if you like a crappy game. You are the fuel of the games industry. They make a crap game, put more money and effort into marketing, then you buy it.

love you, and have much more to say on the matter. And remember RE fans: a key by any other name is still just a key....

RE4 = shoot em up, perhaps that is why you like it, the other games in the series are less action based. RE4 was just Soldier of Fortune in 3rd person POV and some weird fantasy stuff going on. You will be glad to know that from the rumours RE5 will be a return to the series' roots while implementing some of the new elements from RE4, so hopefully both sets of fans (the action fans and Survival the traditionalists) will be happy with that!

that sounds like it could be nice. better still if there were proper puzzles in there, not just finding keys and backtracking. thats the problem with survival horrors right now, they dont put enough emphasis on puzzles, i've been playing project zero 2 and im close to the end, i've done hardly any puzzles, it's not right. got any recomendations?

reply

to the original poster:

i totally agree with you. this game featured unbearable amounts of backtracking and an overload of puzzles, along with the boring and bland personalities of our heroes, claire and chris. wesker was brought back in such a gay way (ohh, i took a special super virus superior to the T-virus right before i got impaled!)

and worst of all, the gore was taken out! no more hunter decapitations! no more blowing off zombie legs and heads! just a whole lot of keys to collect

PS if you think RE4 wasnt scary, this aint no better, by a long shot

Invading....Contamination...Possessed....Biohazard..4!

Maybe you should go back to pop-up books and paint-by-numbers.

I always found it very insular and mentally unbalancing. All the games have different atmospheres, and it depends what mood I'm in. Got this game for my birthday.

I thought CV was pretty messed up..I mean you have a guy that dressed up like his sister...and those Movies with the two of them...I think they got their freak on..I loved it...Great Game.

reply

Got their freak on? Sorry I don't understand. I'll bet she punished him a lot.

reply

Just the way they looked at each other gave me the feeling they were alittle too close if ya know what i mean.

reply

True. But they were both MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Creepy overblown hero-worship. Keep it in the family I say (terrible joke)

reply

Yes it is, but true no doubt.

reply

Personally I think it's a little more complex than simple incest. I doubt Alexia would allow someone 'as low and servile' as Alexander to defile her in such a way. And vice versa, Alexander would not deem himself worthy enough.

reply

Whatever....It never really explains so we will never truly know, but i know that the impression i got.

I also remembering reading somewhere that Alexia's genes was so perfect that despite the "incest" thing, which actually bugged me, it wouldn't have any effects, but you're right, Alexia used her brother as a servant.

Also, I said Alexander when I meant Alfred. Alexander was the father. That's a point which confused me. Who was their mother? An ant? Or is that their aunt! Haha Incest/insect. Pun time.

reply

hehe...thats awful.

reply

Note the ant reference. The villains in this game are obsessed with them. Pity Claire and Chris weren't obsessed with aardvarks really, then it would've been much easier!

reply

HAHA....thats some funny stuff. I love this thread!

You're just a rat in a trap anyway! I'll enjoy watvching you suffer! BAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

SPOILERS!

I agree with the original poster. The game did have some very good elements though such as new weapons; an interesting plotline; lots of action; an interesting (though arrogant and snobbish) supervillain; and new terrifying monsters.

But the game was quite dissapointing. Too much backtracking and repetitive elements. The awkward system of switching between two characters constantly and having to organise your inventory so often. I hated having to remember to do certain things, just so I didn't forget to collect a weapon which was needed to fight Alexia at the end (like Chris needs to collect Claire's empty fire extinguisher, fill it up and use it just to get the magnum. That was annoying).

And then there's the terrible voice acting and characters you just can't take seriously because they're a joke. Steve is annoying as hell. And Alfred, well he's a cross-dressing arselicker who is a weak minded slave to Alexia who, for all her arrogance and boasting, turns out to be a mere mortal who does not have the power to take over the world after all. Even if she managed to kill Chris and Claire, she still could've been killed by any old national army, let alone the UN's combined military might (seeing as one man is able to kill her single-handedly).
I also grew tired of Alexia and Alfred's snobbishness. They kept boasting about how superior they are to everyone else, but in the end they were no better than anyone else. After all, a small group of commoners (Claire, Chris, Steve, and Wesker to a lesser extent) were able to bring them down without any outside help. They were just spoilt little brats who were only successful in life because of their Daddy's genetic engineering which gave them the best genes anyone could ever wish for.

However, I did like th efact that the Ashford's were totally insane and snobbish to a degree, because they made a change from all their predecessors. I love fighting insane, stereotypical villains who want to dominate the world. I think in some ways the Ashfords were better villains than Osmund Saddler; because of their insanity and their snobbishness.

This was probably the weakest game in the series. I wouldn't play it again, except for *beep* and giggles (and to celebrate Alfred's death).

i really cannot understand that people always complain that RE4 isnt scary. LOOK AT THIS TITLE!

no scary atmosphere! barely any jump scenes! the enviornments looked so dull and bland, not something for a survival horror game. the only tension i felt was from the lack of ammo and herbs.
that is not the tension i want to feel. the scariness and tension from creepy atmosphere (like Resident Evil for gamecube) is the right way to make a game scary. not just by giving very little supplies

And He Who Controls the Battlefield Controls History

^^^Poor baby, too lazy to play a smart horror game like this and silent hill. Stick to the newer RE games, more your speed. BTW by saying you will never play this game again proves you are not a real RE gamer fan. RECV has more backstory then any of the RE games next to RE0 by far but only playing it once or twice leaves many unanswered secrets in the dark.

I have to agree with you McCain. Every RE game from 0 to cvx had backtracking in it. Its part of the Re serie, i guess.

I thought Code Veronica wouldn't be that good, but as soon as I started playing I was hooked from beginning to end. The storyline is brilliant and the villains are my absolute favourites of the entire series. Alfred and Alexia.. well where can you go wrong? They're hilarious. Also Wesker returns, and well yeah.. just loved this game. Definitely the second best after REmake.
