so what actually happened to his hand?
and was it fixed at the end? cos the end song (where all the brothers and their wives are happy happy) his hand seems fine.

No..at the end they suggest that the hand has improved/is getting better. With the support the wife lends, it will become almost normal in no time. It does not get fixed completely. It just gets better.

I think it was mentioned by Prem that he hurt his hand by saving his brothers (not sure what did he save them from, it was not said). If I'm wrong, I blame it on a bad translation of the movie.

No, I believe this is correct. They mentioned at the beginning that he helped save Prem from something and hurt his hand permanently in the process.
