American remake?

A long time ago I thought I saw a trailer for an American version of this movie, with Kevin Kline and Joaquin Phoenix as the leads. However, it doesn't seem to have been released and I can't find any info about it via Google. Does anyone remember seeing the same trailer?

I heard something about a remake too, back when this came out. Haven't heard a thing since. There's an entry for a movie called Wild About Harry due out this year, but with no details, could be it.

I hope they don't remake it because the original is so terrific. That said, when I first saw the movie I thought that the theme was universal and that it would be quite easy to remake as an American film.

However, the stars could hardly be Kline and Phoenix unless they've changed the plot significantly. It was a crucial point in the movie that Michel and Harry were the same age - not only because they were schoolmates but also because it allowed them to be buddies (in Harry's mind) in a way that people of different generations generally aren't. Lopez and Lucas are the same age - both born in 1965. Kline is 27 (!) years older than Phoenix. I can totally see Kline in the Harry role, and Phoenix could ... maybe ... be Michel, but not in the same movie.

@nathalie: in considering the charisma/appeal of sergi lopez, I recommend you give him another chance in "an affair of love."

Poor girl... That's all she kept from this excellent movie...

Haha, ja, I thought the same. This mindset it is (I believe) which makes Americans want to remake european movies... Not that they could ever improve anything, no, of course not! But they want to "americanize" them. For Europeans like me indigestible.

And I bet this: in the Hollywood-Version the 3 little girls would wear bathing suits in their bath-tub!!!!! I garantee it!

It's been a while since you posted, do you still think you saw this trailer with Kevin Kline and Joaquin Phoenix? Maybe you got it mixed up with something else? It's interesting if there was a trailer, it would suggest that the filming is complete but the film's been shelved.

Did you see it at the theater or on DVD?

I remember, back in early 2002 when this film was released on DVD in Brazil, that an American remake had been announced, but no casting yet. Never heard of an actual trailer or that they ever actually made it, though.

Right after the film was released they did announce a remake. Wes Craven was attached to direct it. Which would make sense for him around the early 2000's he was desperately trying to get away from horror movies ( thrillers, dramas anything) Unfortunately he only got to do a couple. Music of the Heart and Red eye before getting sucked back in.

Oh Christ, you can see how that greenlight meeting would go.

"Hey, wouldn't it be cool if it turned out they were both the same guy?" says the 19-year-old kid in charge of story production.

"Cool, and, yeah, none of it actually happened - it was all a dream before he died!" says the 15-year-old screenwriter.

Both together: "COOL!"

Kimberly Peirce was most recently slated to direct the American remake as of July 2012:

But I haven't heard anything more about it.

The synopsis to the American film 'The Gift' (2015) sounds incredibly similar to 'Harry...'
