It´s time for you yankees get used to subtitles...

... and begin watching foreign flicks like this one. Actually I usually don´t like european productions, they´re often pretentious and lack some skills very well known by american film makers. But I had met this girl that studies literature and doesn´t like mainstream movies and suggested this french film only to please her - I guess I´d never watch it by my choice. And I was surprised by a great comedy, light and deep at the same time, simple but bright, excellent performers. I strongly recommend it especially to those who like to discuss the film after watching it.

No offence, but from what you say it sounds like you've seen about 0.0001% of European films. There is an absolute gold mine of films over here that many people - not just Americans - won't watch because they can't be bothered reading.

american an european cultures are so different. It is obvious that many do not like flicks coming from the other side of the ocean.
European flicks are, for us, easier to understand, often you may think that what's going on in the movie can happen to you tomorrow. Can't say to share same feeling when looking to an american movie and I do not mean Rambo or John MacLaine, but even for the independent american movies picturing normal people. They are anyway too far from our normal life.
Having said that, it is obvious that american film makers are the best and we, as european can compete only in certain areas of this new art called cinema

I am German, living in the USA for some years now, and I must say this is not another country, but really another planet!! Yes, of course european movies are the mirror to european lives and european attitudes, and therefore I am sticking to them while living here.

I can't stand Hollywood's crap, and I am ignoring it as good as I can, although I am living here now. But I can't change anymore, I was already middle-aged when I got here.

We have rented almost all european movies from Blockbuster by now, and unfortunately they are getting less and less. What will I do once having seen all available, and the new ones are not coming in fast enough?

It's been four years since your comment but I think it sums up perfectly the difference between European and American movies. Particularly as this is my third Agnès Jaoui film - along with Le rôle de sa vie and Un air de famille - one gets involved in a French movie. Many times there is a character with whom we can directly relate.

With an American movie, one observes from a distance. Too often, the "humor" comes from looking down upon a character... feeling superior.

For me, adapting to sub-titles is worth the learning curve in order to be able to enjoy a much better quality of movie. It's like being a contestant on Jeopardy: you can't follow along as Alex is reading the clue, you have to scan quickly the words, look at the screen and then wait for the action to catch up.

I enjoyed this movie with its very believable characters, situations and dialog. When it was over, it felt like my friends had left me and gone home.
