Lita Complaint

Edgeplay is such an engrossing movie--whenever it's on TV, I drop everything and watch it.

Although I'm a fan of Lita Ford--and do love how she complains about Jackie Fox--she said that Fox wanted to wear high heals and have long finger nails and that the girls didn't care about that, or they weren't as "girly" I guess. Ford also hated Cherie's linergie outfit. But Ford had a total makeover in the '80s--black bustier, fishnets, spike high heals. Very much the image of metal sexpot, isn't Lita Ford being hypocritical here?

Every time there's mention of a possible Runaways reunion, Lita is always the instigator. She's also the first to blow-up and tell everyone to go to hell once they start discussions. Perhaps she's bipolar.

reply

I agree with the hypocritical part. After knocking Cherie Currie, she starts bleaching her hair and becoming the new THIN sex kitten only a year or so after Currie left the band !

Yeah, Lita makes a good blonde, but she is obviously so jealous of Currie. Lita might have been a more true professional in some senses but she should have the grace to point out what a great asset Cherie was to the band. Cherie has said nice things about her, too bad this is one professional aspect Lita lacks.

reply

Lita also ranked on Joan's supposed Lesbianism, constantly referring to her as a "great front MAN" after Cherie left. "Yeah, she was a great front MAN." Sure, and Lita's a bloated, drunk has-been who's living off her real estate investments. Where did HER music career go?

reply

C'mon, what is the matter with you people? Well, if you people don't like Lita's solo work (let me tell ya, I'm not a fan of her solo work - although I like a song here, a song there...) but that's no reason to attack her without a real point.

There's no doubt about the fact that she was a huge part of the band. Joan was the leader, of course, but Lita was responsible for a huge part of their sound; that was basically guitar-driven. So she had a huge part once she was one of the 2 guitar-players and the best musician in the band, obviously!!

I think that there's a lot of anger because she was the hottest chick in the band, showing her legs (nice!!), moving her hair, smiling. And she could be beautiful without acting like a princess, as Jackie did and she talked about it in the movie. It's possible to be pretty with attitude; Lita was, Joan was! In fact, that is the best about her beauty: "wild beauty". Is that the reason of your complains? Is it because guys get happy as horny-little-boys when watching a beautiful girl like her playing that good? Of course that there are lots of girls that are prettier, but none of them can play like her (when they can play at all!). And I'm not talking about her solo years, when she became the metal queen and had to go with the "80's big hair" flow, I'm talking about the Runaways years, when she had her hair long and straight.

Cherie was unprofessional, according to the movie and very self-centered, according to Jackie Fox. What have she done with her career after the Runaways??? NOTHING!! (She did "Foxes" and that's all!). Lita had a dream, according to her, and Cherie was creating problems to Lita - and all the band members - to follow that dream. Lita didn't care about what was happening in Cherie's life, wasn't JEALOUS of her. But she had a dream and she, along with Joan and Sandy who shared that dream, went after it. Nobody stoped the band to go on after Cherie departure. Joan didn't cry, she understood Lita and went along with the band. LITA MADE IT, CHERIE DID NOT!!!Someone above said that she tried to sell as a guitar player without using sex but she couln't. So she start using sex and succeded. That's true! But Lita always had a strong sexiness even in the Runaways years. I'm not a fan of her 80's stuff, but she did what she "liked" at the time, and got what she wanted; SUCCESS! Isn't that perfect? To do what you love and get recognition with it.

About the above topic, of her ranking on Joan lesbianism, that's JUST STUPID. C'MON JUST READ WHAT YOU WROTE!! READ THE REASONS YOU HAVE TO CLAIM SUCH STUPIDTY!!

About the reunion. You people should get better information! Lita was the first to talk about the reunion, she was the one that went after the other girls to do the reunion. Of course that all the others girls (Sandy and Cherie) were just waiting for her and Joan to do it, so she or Joan had to start it up. Joan never did it, Lita did and Joan refused for months (maybe years). Lita sent letters, made calls, talked to everyone and get great support from the girls..., except for Joan. A few years (months??) latter Joan decided that she would do the reunion, but she would only do it if her producer/manager Kenny Laguna were part of the whole thing. Lita got pissed off with the Laguna story and got out of the reunion. So this is it! Lita tried and tried and brought Sandy and Cherie along to talk to Joan, but she would only do it if Kenny were involved... Screw her... We all know what she did to Vicky and her movie!!!! Which, by the way, is the reason we are all here talking about The Runaways.

I also agree that Lita wasn't being homophobic to Joan with her "front man" comments--you have to keep in mind that the hard rock genre is quite masculine, so it may be quite natural to call a man or woman a front man of the band without attaching any meaning to that, but I could be naive, too.

As for taking sides in the Runaway saga, that is impossible. All these women have flaws.

But what I'm talking about is Lita Ford's image makeover in the '80s--and how she now complains about female musicians having to put on a sexy image to be successful when she did the same damn thing. And she's not the only aging rock goddess complaining about female artists and their sexy images: the Wilson sisters were on Crossroads, IIRC, whining about how women have to be pole dancers now in the music biz--yet wasn't it Heart's cleavage conscious makeover that led to the second wave of their fame? I also heard some other women in Rosanne Arquette's snoozefest music documentary All We Are Saying complaining about this--I'm thinking Stevie Nicks, but I'm not sure. So Lita isn't the only one.

IMHO, none of these female acts needed sex to sell themselves. If given a chance, they could've made it on their rock-n-roll skills alone. But sex and rock and roll are forever connected. Complaining about the Brittany Spears of the world now make these rock icons seem old and jealous. It's really sad if Lita was pushed into that '80s image by the record co. and management knowing that she feels that is all bs.

reply

Lita wearing tight leather clothes while wildly playing the guitar is more of a role model for women than a sexual image. Every girl wants to be pretty and so Lita did lose weight and wear heavy make up...but she rocked while she did it and she did it alone. She wasn't overly sexual at all...maybe compared to Joan she was but aren't we all compared to Joan? That's NOT a diss to the legendary Joan Jett but her image was always more uptight.

reply

Joan Jett is way more sexy than Lita.

I agree with whoever said she's bipolar.

reply

I don't care what anybody says, Lita is one hell of a guitarist and she should've been recognized like Joan was. Of course everyone is jealous of another person at a certain point and you never can tell what really went on behind closed doors.

reply

I agree with the bipolar/manic-depression diagnosis... but she was also the most interesting to listen too. She was funny without (apparently) realizing she was being funny. Especially when she talked about the Ramones tour and how the crowd threw loose change at the Ramones, so chicken wire was put up, but taken down for them because all they threw was "condoms and s**t..." at The Runaways. That was funny, but you also wondered how they all managed to survive that night after night on stage. Whew!!

reply

I still love this documentary so much--and glad that Vicky Blue made it--and found all the Runaways ladies interesting and funny. It's funny how their accounts and stories varied from one another.

It's been awhile since I've seen Edgeplay, but:
klou94, I thought Lita knew that she was being amusing during those interview segments. And what she had in her glass is anyone's guess.

And are you sure Lita says that "all they threw was "condoms and s**t..." at The Runaways?" I thought that she said that "they never threw anything at us" because she was implying that they were a better band than the Ramones.

reply

Yeah LOL. I never thought about what Lita may have been drinking (in her glass) until you brought it up. I think what she actually said was they threw "condoms and stupid stuff like that..." STill kinda bad, though.

reply

I think most of us remember the 80's and how women were dressed. Heart had their second wave with the, as they call it, "The Leave It to Cleavage Tour" where they hit MTV decked out in tight leather and heavy make-up. Did they like that route? From their accounts, no. Lita is a hard rocking and talented woman who did what she had to do and she looked good doing it.

Lita tried for years to get in contact with Joan (not only for a Runaways reunion, but just to talk)but Kenny Laguna by-passed everything and wouldn't let it happen. She ended up meeting with Joan at an airport for coffee and that was about that.

Doesn't anyone remember when Joan dolled herself up in the for The Hit List? And have we also forgotten the video for "Do You Wanna Touch"?

It doesn't matter who layered the make-up on or who wore the less clothes. Lita could pull off wearing certain things and probably is more comfortable doing so than Joan. Joan is/was a Suzi Quatro clone and wearing fulkl leather was her gig.

Lita has been my guitar idol since I was 12. She kicks ass on the guitar. Joan was one of the first women I had ever seen play the guitar (along with Nancy Wilson). Yes, Lita has more talent and ability than Joan but Joan was/is also a solid rhythm player.

As for Lita being a bloated alcoholic living on her royalties...

She is in her 40's, sitting back and raising her children. What's wrong with that? Sorry that she hasn't taken the plastic surgery route, but she is a woman aging. And she still looks damn good for her age.

One other thing I have to say and I think it is something we all would agree on... Who else wants to club Kim Fowley like a baby seal?

reply

Lita needs anger management.

Lita was great in edgeplay, she was very very funny sometimes without
even realising it.I cannot wait for the original version to be
released. All of the girls except Vicki Blue did not want to
come out and tell everything for fear of being sued by at least
one of the others.

I saw Edgeplay for the first time last night. I'm glad that I got to hear Lita's side of the story re: the fight that made Cherie leave the band. The Runaways movie just made Lita look like a b*tch to me. I was a fan of hers in the 80s and was disappointed that she wasn't featured more in the movie. But, Cherie's unprofessionalism woulda made me lose it too.

just watched this movie and lita was the most obnoxious. can not stand her. extremely high ego, very hypocritical, and due to her ego she has mass amounts of other bad traits such as showing zero compassion for others. along with that she has major issues over the whole situation she needs to come to terms with, forgive and release from her mind. though that last statement can be said about all the girls.
