upcoming RUNAWAYS movie sorta makes me wonder.....

....why Joan - who wouldnt participate in the EDGEPLAY documentary -or even let them use RUNAWAYS songs in it - is agreeing to work on this movie. Anyone else find that odd?

Joan was always my favorite of all the RUNAWAYS but I was sorta pissed she didnt work on EDGEPLAY with them. Ifd she didnt wanna tell her version of the sotroy I can sorta respect that, but she shouldve at least let them have at the music.

And -if she didnt wanna talk about her RUNWAYS past, then why work on this new movie? OR did she know about the prospect of the movie coming up and THATS why she didnt wanna work on EDGEPLAY?

This seemed strange to me too. Maybe it was her management that had something to do with it, but I do remember reading something online where she states she didn't participate on Edgeplay because she regarded it a "bitch fest." But then how do you film a movie about The Runaways and not have it be the same type of 'tell-all' that she is now partaking in? That doesn't make any sense.

The only thing I could guess as to why she may not have ACTUALLY been involved in Edgeplay was because Cherie Currie openly admitted to having a lesbian affair with her, and I'm not sure if Joan has ever publicly come out of the closet about her sexuality. Maybe she will after the movie is released.

This may have been posted somewhere below, so sorry if it's a repost. But here is Joan Jett's response when asked why she wouldn't participate in Edgeplay:

"To me, the Runaways is my baby, so you have to understand my perspective. If there’s gonna be a Runaways movie, it should be about what we accomplished, the tours we did, the bands we played with, the people we inspired. I’m not gonna participate in a Jerry Springer fest, bottom line. With any band, you’re gonna have interpersonal conflicts, but if that’s what they thought the Runaways were about—about breaking a bass or putting on make-up—well, it’s very disappointing. Very, very disappointing. I wanted nothing to do with it because that’s not the band I was in. [The film] was a totally different take on what went down."
Sounds reasonable to me, and judging by all the sniping that went on in the film, she was absolutely right to avoid doing it.

The script for the movie covers a lot of the same content that Edgeplay had. I wonder if Joan has rethought her involvement (or the lack thereof) in Edgeplay and if she'd be willing to record some statements and let Vicki re-cut the documentary with that and the "right" music... and if Vicki would do it.

That really would be sweet. I like the film as it is but it could be evn better with Joan and /or the music!

It's hard to imagine anyone remotely interested in the Runaways or 70's rock and roll rushing to a movie that stars the teen babe from "Twilight" and the latest horribly-overexposed-child-star-who's-now-become-an-awkward-teenager. Similarly, it's hard to imagine the teenage fans of those two nitwits being interested in the Runaways or the 70's rock scene (which even their parents might have been too young to remember).

It just seems like a bad idea to me. But if it works out maybe they'll make a movie about the Ramones (a band of the same era that I like much better than the Runaways) with the GUY from "Twilight" and maybe one or more of the Jonas Brothers or someone from "High School Musical".

Actually, thinking it about it, it might be for the best if this movie bombs. . .

That would be cruel.

I find it extremely odd also. Joan refused to cooperate with "Edgeplay" or allow the Runaways' music to be used, ostensibly because she wanted to move beyond the band and focus on post-runaways career with the Blackhearts.

Could money have something to do with her change a mind? Or, more likely, was "The Runaways" in the planning stages when "Edgeplay" was being filmed -- and Joan wanted to wait for a better vehicle to tell the story?

I'm as far as they come from a tweenie (and getting further by the minute, I might add). Nor have I seen or care to see "Twilight." But I can't wait to see "The Runaways."

From what I have read and understand, there was a contract that required Joan to participate in a movie about The Runaways from a LONG time ago. It started much earlier, I think in the late 80's, and she did not like how it was looking so she pulled the plug or it was somehow shut down otherwise.

She didn't do Edgeplay, according to her, because she didn't care to be involved in all the dirt-slinging. I doubt it had anything to do with her sexuality...she has repeatedly said to listen to her music and you'll know what she's about, and then eventually she came out as a bisexual. Singing songs titled Androgynous and songs about accepting everyone for who they are (Everyday People, Bad Reputation, etc.) I doubt she worried about being "outed". And how would she have even known that would be discussed before any of it was shot? It doesn't make sense. Even if she had asked, because she was nervous, they could have agreed to pull the topic if it meant she'd be involved. Right?

Fast forward to 7/25/2008 when she read Floria's script adapted from Neon Angel and liked it a lot. She met Kristen Stewart, who had been cast as her, and spent New Year's Eve 2008-2009 talking with her and celebrating the new year. She has said that night is when she knew the movie would be exactly what she had hoped, and then she became very involved with the project.

As for the person basing his interest (and others' interests) in seeing The Runaways film solely on the fact that he didn't like another movie the actress has worked on (Twilight), I feel very bad for you. I don't like EVERY film with Brad Pitt, but my dislike of Snatch did not stop me from going to see Fight Club. This guy is gonna miss out on a ton of great movies by doing this. And Joan herself said she was so impressed with Kristen, and that Kristen did an incredible job. At one point, they sent a tape of Kristen singing I Love Playin' With Fire, and Joan told the guy he had made a mistake and sent a tape of Joan and not Kristen...it was Kristen, and Joan was completely blown away.

And as for Dakota, she's an incredible actress who, at the age of 7, was nominated for a SAG award...the youngest person to be nominated ever...for her work in i am sam with Sean Penn. She has won numerous awards since then and has a strong resume. She is already getting great reviews for her portrayal of Cherie, and Cherie herself has stated that Dakota is her favorite actress and she feels honored that Dakota chose to play her.

I haven't been on this board in a while.

You make a good point about that. What I was referring to was an article I'd read online with Vicki Blue where she states Joan was the last to be interviewed for the film, and thus she was given a preview of the film up until then with all the other Runaways interviews and the songs Vicki had included, but Joan balked at this, refused to participate or allow The Runaways music to be used after seeing the footage. As I stated earlier, Joan did say she refused to partake in the project because she termed it a "bitch fest", so she obviously knew what the film was about and what all was said by the other girls.

Also, I should mention, that according to Joan's commentary on "The Runaways" movie she has never come out as gay or bisexual. She repeatedly says, "Your curiosity won't be satisfied by me," when the Cherie and Joan makeout scenes appear on screen. She doesn't discuss her sexuality.
