We'll never forget you Sandy West...

Sandy West, drummer for the influential 70s band The Runaways, has died after a long battle with lung cancer. She left an indelible mark on rock music as a founding member of The Runaways, which featured fellow rockers Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, and as a leading inspiration for a number of notable musicians, both male and female. Many young musicians can trace their inspiration directly to the first time they heard "Cherry Bomb." She will be remembered by more than one generation of fans as a strong part of their musical landscape. But Sandy's impact was felt far outside of the music industry as a loyal friend, loving confidante and strong defender of those she loved most. Her strength as a player, passion as a person, and dedication as a friend will be remembered always by friends, fans and fellow musicians alike.

I'm listening to "C'mon" right now. The more I listen to THE RUNAWAYS nowadays the more I realize just how much they influenced the sound of the music that came out after them.
It's a pity a lot of people don't give them the recognition they deserve.

Sandy was a great drummer and when I heard the news I was so sad. It felt like someone in my family died because the Runaways are my fave band and I heard she was sick but never thought she was that sick.

The most moving part of this movie was at the end, when Sandy was basically pleading with the girls for a reunion. I don't know if she knew she was sick when this movie was made, but it was heartbreaking to watch. If I was one of the ex-Runaways I would be bawling watching that.

This is a late reply but people have reported she was a heavy smoker and it most likely contributed to, if not outright caused, her lung cancer. It should be a wake up call to everyone of the dangers of smoking. I know because my father died of lung cancer also, but not nearly as young as Sandy did.

I happened to see a clip one of the young actresses portraying Lita, Sandy, or bass player "Robin" in the Runaways movie posted on YouTube. It supposedly was the last day of shooting and these three were hanging out together. It was sad to see all three of them light up cigarettes during the clip. Didn't any of them learn from what happened to Sandy???
