Why did Benge scream when Grove came for him?

One second Benge is all cool with Grove following him on the carriage, he even teases him ("Follow me, Tinkerbell"), it's like he's completely sure that Grove's beams can't affect his shadows - which is why he not only faces Grove, but actually spreads himself out like this, I guess. But then, when Grove actually shoots at him, he suddenly screams? Which would be okay if Benge was wrong and Grove actually DID hurt him, but there's no indication of that in the following scenes. So it'd make more sense for Benge to smirk or laught in reaction to Groves blast. You could say he was just surprised, or the attack hurt more than he thought, but still, it seems a little bit mystifying. Was anybody else surprised by this?

You can feel pain without being injured. Ever have anyone squeeze you in a pressure point? Can hurt like a hell without leaving an injury. I'd say that was probably what happened. The beams of light were powerful enough to hurt Benge without physically harming him, easy to believe for a being who deals in shadows, and that Grove was powerful. Besides, Benge was a talkative bad ass, so shooting his mouth off and overestimating his ability to handle the blasts make sense.

That's what I figured. It just seemed something was missing - I mean, Benge was totally fine and back to wisecracking just moments after.

Benge was also making an awfully lot of noise anyways-and I think he actually liked the pain, if that makes sense, it was a not a cry of pain but pain mixed with joy. His cream sounded maniac/psychotic, I would say he wanted to provoke Grove and to show him that despite his powerful rays all he can do is... nothing.

There was more to this scene but it got cut before the final release of the movie. I remember reading somewhere about it.
