Favorite Haneke Film

I'm sure this is a topic somewhere and I apologize if this is a redundant question. I'm just curious to hear which movies have meant the most to people. I've seen Time Of The Wolf, Cache, The Piano Teacher (this was the first one I saw), Funny Games, and I just finished watching Code Unknown. I think that my favorite would have to be a tie between Funny Games and Cache. Brilliant cinema.

top three (for me) are cache, the piano teacher, funny games.

i give the top spot to the piano teacher.

My favourite modern director

1 Cache
2 Funny Games
3 Code Unknown
4 The Piano Teacher
5 Time of the Wolf

Need to see Benny's Video, 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, The Seventh Continent...

reply

My top five of the movies I've seen (still have to see Funny Games):
1. Caché
2. Code Unknown
3. Benny's Video
4. 71 Fragments ...
5. The Piano Teacher

It appears to me that very few people had an opportunity to watch 71 Fragments. The "cinephiles" who disliked Caché because the thriller is not resolved (who donnit?) should adore 71 Fragments: they'll have no clue of where all these fragmented stories are leading... until the very end of the movie, which should satisfy them. Just teasing: those frustrated by Caché will find another reason for not liking a Haneke movie.

Nice on-- err, except the film begins with an account of the killings to follow.

reply

1- Cache
2- Code Unknown
3- Piano Teacher

haven't seen the other ones. Is Binoche or Hupert in them? I love both of these 2 actresses. They are both superb.

Time of the Wolf & Code Unknown are my two favorite Haneke films. I've seen all of his movies, but these have more of an emotional resonance. I was deeply moved by the final scenes of TOTW. I do, however, recommend all of his titles.

reply

1. The Seventh Continent 2. The Pianist Teacher 3. Hidden 4. Benny's Video 5.71 fragments 6. Code unknown. Haven't seen Time of the Wolf yet.

reply

I think The Seventh Continent, Cache and Code Unknown are his best films. Not that his other films aren't just as brilliant. These three alone though could possibly save humanity.

Cousin Cheryl, I don't think the family REALLY knows you.

reply

I would have to agree with The Seventh Continent(1), Cache(2), and Code Unknown(3) . Followed by Funny Games(4), Benny's Video(5), 71 fragments(6), The Piano Teacher(7).

Haven't seen Time of the Wolf or The Castle, but I'm going to watch them both very soon. Definitely one of the best directors...

reply

1. Cache

4. Code Unknown
5. 7th Continent

reply

1. Caché
2. La Pianiste
3. Code Inconnu
4. Le Temps du Loup
5. Funny Games

Caché is easily his most accomplished feature to date. It's one of the most maddening puzzles I've ever seen, and it actually pulls together a lot of the thematic strands of his earlier movies. La Pianiste is a close second followed by Code Inconnu.

Le Temps du Loup, while not a weak film, I did not find as challenging as his other work. As a concept it's interesting, but ultimately it doesn't really break new ground in the "genre". The movie follows along a fairly predictable path.

Funny Games I put last because I feel there is something fundamentally dishonest about it. I think the concept behind this movie (whatever you or Haneke thinks it is) was probably more interesting on paper than on film. I won't deny the intensity of the material but in the end it doesn't amount to much more than a clever con pulled on the audience.
