Missed the beginning - a little help, please

I realize I'm posting much later than this movie's release but I only just now saw it on cable but I didn't find it until Bob (Robert, Rob, Bobert - lol) was being hired permanently.

What happened to the kids' father? Is "Mistress Jaimeson" a divorced woman or a widow or was she artificially inseminated so there had never been a father-figure in the home?

One of the children - I think the little boy - said, that they don't have a father. Their mom got them from a sperm bank. Or he rather said something like 'a bank where men deposit and women withdraw'.
