sister my sister

is this better than sister my sister? is the acting better? i don't mind subtitles, in fact i prefer them. anybody seen both?

I've seen both, this one is better. This is really a remarkable film. Acting is flawless. Watching this movie, I understood these girls completely, everything is done to compel the viewer.
The review here that mentions class conflict is dead on. If you've ever been working-class and female, or just the first one even, you'll be especially moved by this movie.
I honestly don't remember if it had subtitles! Guess that's good....

yes i also think that this adaptation was better. it was filmed approximately where the real story took place and it's hard to beat what j-pierre denis did in terms of atmosphere and feeling: the total absence of music, the starkness of ...everywhere.
there was a user who commented on the incestuous sex scene with the crepes: he said it was appaling (because of the hairy armpits)
if you're going to tackle such a story..white satin sheets and pretty sunsets certainly aren't the way to go.
i'm not sure if i think that the movie helped...explain/justify the girls' actions, but dismissing a film this like with sylvie testud's phenomenally good performance is simply a pity.

I agree. This one seemed more authentic and possibly truer to the real story.
Sister My Sister wasn't bad. Probably helps that Murderous Maids was made in France by the French

This version is better, however "Sister my Sister" is more dark and eerie, "Murderous Maids" comes more from a docudrama perspective, but it is better.

This movie is a more comprehensive and accurate rendering because it was given the full French treatment. Only the French could give the story full justice because this is their "crime of the century."

But Sister My Sister (1994) can stand on its own feet. It's not the definitive movie of the crime but it's a compelling interpretation originally meant to be played in a theatre.

We get a different angle to the story because the victims are give an edgier most likely fictionalized personalities especially the lady of the house played by Julie Walters who takes top billing.

Also, the man of the house is eliminated and that makes for a big difference in the master-servant and family dynamics. The atmosphere of the house is gothic-like with the overbearing mother and a repressed wallflower daughter.

Although "Les blessures assassines" is a bit more realistic to the events, I liked "Sister, My Sister" more. IMO, It is darker and I loved the acting of the two actresses. I and liked very much the fact that in the whole movie you didn't see any man (even the face of the photographer is hidden, and all this only because the men don't matter in the world of the sisters.) I find it good that all the happenings actually find place in this little vacuum of the house and it therefore comes to the murder! It is a bit more like an theather play, but at the end the two movies are good and worth to be seen.

I've seen them both and recommend both. Not that I think one is better than the other; both are excellent, though disturbing. It's just that SMS is subtle while LBA is totally "in your face". If you're easily creeped out, consider yourself warned.

I've seen both and I agree with you that this version was far better that "Sister My Sister". I didn't mind the subtitles at all either. Another thing that I liked about this version over Sister my Sister, and I don't mean this in a sexual way, But I liked that the incest part of the story in this version was a lot more tense and raw than the watered down incest part of the story of Sister My Sister.
