Gibson and Li?

Anybody know how in the hell these two got mixed up in this crapfest?

This was a bit of a slow movie I grant with some obvious rip offs of Highlander, Matrix and some others. But it was not a crap fest unless you were looking for a movie that was all beat them up and kill them. This was a thinking movie as well as a martial arts movie. So if you can think then you will like it if not then you wont.....

I agree with you Black Wolf; this is a thinking man's movie, the martial arts aspect is just a vehicle to convey spiritual truths and warrior philosophy, I personally don't care too much how the fight scenes came across. I found it entertaining to watch; I've never been a fan of Billy Zane but he is excellent in this role, and there a few odd laughs here and there. I would really love to get hold of the soundtrack, as there were a couple of good tunes in the film.

i thought every aspect of this movie was terrible. it definitly was not a "thinking man's movie" to anyone with a grasp on reality, spirituality, and logic. billy zane was horrible... and this movie made me realize what a terrible actor he really is. everything about this movie was terrible... to the point that i couldnt stop thinking it should be mystery science theatre'd one day.

I actually really like Billy Zane, but man, this was crap, and he was crap in it. I watched it with a friend of mine, and when we weren't laughing at how pathetic it was, we were p.o.'d at how pathetic it was. Zane was the highlight of the film, and it's the worst thing I've ever seen him do.

Hasn't Zane's career been on one hell of a downward spiral since Titanic, B-movie after B-movie. Did anyone look at the characters and listen to their delivery of their lines, I was in disbelief at the bo$$ocks that fell from their mouths (especially the fire element), they need an award for keeping a straight face. What was Jet-Li and Gibson's involvement, it can't be the fight scenes or the religious aspects, can it?

reply

You keep saying that this is a thinking mans film, but on the back of the DVD box it just says it's a "hi-octane adrenaline fuelled ride...". I sat watching it until the end, waiting for the moment that it may become hi-octane of adrenaline fuelled. That moment never happened, so I was totally disappointed.

As for it being a thinking mans film, I thought a lot while I was watching it. I thought to myself "why on Earth did I pay to watch this useless film?!?".

black wolf, you gotta be kidding! get real! this movie was terrible. on realizing that it is a bad film, however, there is still some enjoyment in watching it.

I couldn't finish this movie, even with my high tolerance for bad martial arts movies. I resent the 45 minutes I wasted on it. I hope none of those bums ever works again.

I can see why Mel Gibson produced this movie. The spiritual undertones were wayyyy to huge to ignore, and the guy is hardcore christian. Jet Li, on the other hand, I'm stumped. Sure this was a martial arts movie, but nothing special. The best I can come up with was he owed somebody a favour and this was it.

This was a crappy movie, no doubt about it. But don't hate Billy Zane because of it. He's more a comedian than an actor (see Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight), and he did what he does best in this flick, he made you laugh. Or at least chuckle... I certainly did.

I think the Gibson and Li connection is related to their work together on Lethal Weapon 4. I think what's likely is that maybe Mel wanted to make some money on this project by financing it, and managed to bring in Jet Li because Jet owed him for being in 4, the "favor" the previous poster mentioned. Just my personal theory, I doubt Jet Li really had much to do with it at all other than money.
