DVD, and your favourite character.

Hey everyone, "Cafe" was such a great series, does anyone know if there's any plan on releasing the DVD? (or if it already is available ANYWHERE to buy) I hope so, no collection is complete without this, great story, great characters, great acting, fun, drama and everything in between!

My fave character is obviously Gaviota,
Marcela (The beautiful Dana Garcia)
Lucrecia,
and Carmenza.

Hello DaveMX and Miketux-1....yes this was and still is a superb series...NOW they are thinking of making a US version with the wine industry as the background instead of the coffee.

I have seen the series in TWO languages, the original in Spanish and Italian.

I have to say I have seen lately two TELENOVELAS completely(whole 160 episodes and more) because how good the script writing, the story itself and the cast of actors and crew made it special. The others "soaps" left me cold since it was the usual story telling of an impossible love with dramatic events in between. Cafe and Betty La Fea had something more.

BOTH these telenovelas are from the same author and from Colombia, Fernando Gaitan S. wrote the story as a novel of Cafe con aroma de mujer in the late 80's. I do not know how he wrote the characters of Gaviota and Sebastian, I would think they had to change the script to accomodate both the personality of Margarita Rosa and Guy. The series was shown on the Colombian network RCN in 1994, since then there has been many copied versions most from Mexico. Nothing to compare to the original. What was a plus is the music and the singing especially coming from one of the protagonists Gaviota/Margarita Rosa who before never sang and was a revelation for her during the making of the series.

This added to the beautiful concept, the special chemistry ON-SCREEN of Margarita Rosa and Guy, the dramatic ouvertures, the comic backdrops, and ALL the intrigues in between what you find in a good ROMANTIC story telling. CAFE CON AROMA DE MUJER and YO SOY BETTY LA FEA are considered CLASSICS in the LATINO telenovela industry so much so they have been shown and remade in many worldwide international versions. I keep seeing them and is mesmerized how fresh still the story and the characters are.

As some of you know Betty la Fea as been reprised as UGLY BETTY on the US network ABC and already has won many prizes.

To both of you DVDs from the network RCN does not exist, many viewers on the Internet are selling it however as copied or recorded from TV, the quality is not digital or 100 percent, however I did purchase one and I found the quality good and all the 160 episodes are found, it is not the best but you could still watch and be re-enchanted again in re-seeing it many times. Quality of sound, image and continuation(since cut from commercials) is about 80-85%.

So if you want to know more how to get them please PM me and I will give you the address.

On Youtube if you search "Cafe con aroma de mujer" you could find some episodes and some specials as these ones:

Hey there, i just can't believe RCN is not even planning the DVD release for this wonderful series, (i don't like the "Telenovela" label), i waited 10 years to get "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" on DVD, so i think i'll have to wait even more for "Cafe...", which is ridiculous, having every stupid today's series released on DVD only months after their original broadcast run.
The good news (sorta) is that MRDF is taping a new series (soap) scheduled to start on april 20, through Mexico's Azteca 13 channel, let's see, and hope for "Cafe..." to see the light of day on DVD.
I don't consider buying a poor-quality DVD from pirates on the web.

reply

DaveMX, I hope that the waiting will not be too long as far as I can see none of the telenovelas shown on the Latin TV networks are released by the same networks on DVD or am I wrong.

I could not believe that classics and especially after the super huge success of Yo soy Betty la fea that RCN did not sell it on DVD. What I believe is that they want to leave the door open for copies of the TV series to be reproduced and recopied on other international TV networks so that people who have and have not seen the original will see the other series being copied and produced to promote the ratings and of course $$$ for the networks.

Cuando seas mia and Destilando Amor are two Mexican projects copied from the original Cafe now being shown on Mexican TV.

About Margarita if you want to see her interviews on Youtube about "Mientras haya vida" her new Mexican project, I suggest you do so and hope that her series will be seen on North American networks...which I doubt but who knows. BTW the release is the 30th April from what I have heard and they will go under production starting the 9th of April.

If you are in the US let me know if you see it on your Latin networks.

Cheers.

Hey there, my guess? you'll see ABC's "Ugly Betty" (America Ferrera), and Televisa's "La fea mas bella" on DVD way sooner than you'll see "Cafe" or "Betty la fea", if ever. Maybe RCN doesn't even have a home entertainment distribution company, it's so weird, because i'm sure they know how much many of us want to own Margarita's wonderful series, i e-mailed them directly, and i received no response, or maybe i'm wrong, this board is almost dead lol
I've seen some episodes of the remakes, it simply isn't "Cafe Con Aroma De Mujer".
As you may know, Televisa is releasing their catalogue of past and present Telenovelas on DVD (edits though), i'm no fan of the genre, which is ironic, because "Cafe" is the only soap i love, and the 1 i can not have lol. "The waiting has been long, since '94, 13 years now, at least my other favorite show Sabrina The Teenage Witch is now out on DVD and i only had to wait 10 years for that! lol
I don't know if you have seen "Cadenas De Amargura". that's another great soap not on DVD.

Davemx, thanks for replying the only two telenovelas I watched are Betty la fea and Cafe, I will not watch any other cause I am not a soap/telenovela type of watcher, the theme is always the same, two people meet, fall in love and between the first kiss and the last kiss on their wedding day you will see all the impossible situations(lasting about 160 1-hour episodes) that happens so that these two individuals do not get together or simply they use some sort of Cinderella syndrome and make a new updated version.

I watched both telenovelas by chance and I knew there was something different about them and the fact they came both from Colombia and the same author Fernando Gaitan to me was no coincidence.

I regret that RCN does not respond, I am sure they know about many viewers wanting to have both series on DVD, I did buy by chance the two DVDs on the Internet and so far the quality is not the best but the series are complete plus I can watch whenever I want.

BTW did you go on Youtube to watch the recent interviews of Margarita and Saul, do you get channel 13 of TV Azteca where you are????

Anyway, if you have any more news please PM or post on this board I will watch for news.

Take care and Happy Easter.

Davemx,

In case you did not know Margarita Rosa is shooting a new telenovela in Mexico called Mientras Haya Vida.

If you do a search on the words Mientras Haya Vida on Youtube, you will find all the related videos of the interviews and some of the scenes.

Hope to hear your comments on the telenovela.

Cheers.

Hi there, i haven't seen a single episode of the soap, lol that's why i haven't posted anything, like i said, i'm no fan of the genre, and i've been watching something else at the same time slot, Cafe was such a phenomenon, that everybody tuned it to watch, truly unique, it's cool to hear you like the show though, enjoy.

reply

Davemx,

I have watched so far about 15 episodes and the story quite frankly is what you would see in most soaps, TV series involving drama, romantic overturns, and other upheavals.

FYI... I do not want to spoil for others or yourself in case you will start to watch, let's say it is about two worlds, the rich and the poor living side by side in busy Mexico city, the drama of a woman with three girls of whom two are over 18 and one little one of 10 yrs old, her husband left her to go work in the US and never came back this several years ago and she had to take care of her family, this is the story of Maria Montero versus the story of the world of Hector Cervantes, once a poor young man who use to live in the same complex as the Monteros who became a rich architect who's eldest son witnessed his mother's suicide....more to follow if you are interested.

You can see where this is leading....up and down moments....with side turnovers between the young and the old, the rich and famous, the poor and the forgotten....including commercial espionnage, corruption and the many other real like events going on in that world right now. So far I am watching to see what will happen.

I have to admit the MAGIC of Cafe and the other Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea had truly something different and wholesome about it, that is why even after so many years they are still huge super hits and international phenomenons.

I am curious to hear your opinion about Cafe what really drew you to watch the novela.

Cheers.

Hey there, thanks for the synopsis, sounds cool, i haven't been watching though, i started watching Cafe because there was this huge buzz about it, that i couldn't resist tuning in to see what it was about lol and i was surprised to find it really was a nice series, with lots of elements that combined made it really wnjoyable, good writing mostly, and "chemistry" episode after episode i was hooked, besides, there were these gorgeous women, MRDF, and Danna Garcia (she has the most beautiful eyes!).
