Aussie definition of wog?

In Australia, when you call someone a wog, what does it mean? Is it a term for Italians, or is it people from the Mediterranean in general(Greeks, Arabs, Turks etc.)?

Republicans dont watch stand up, theyre busy watching cartoons, trying to see who's gay.

reply

Yeah mate it encompasses mediterranean people in general. But the strange thing is that people from these ethnic backgrounds actually refer to themselves as wogs, its not seen as a bad thing

it can be seen as bad if a none meditarnian says it to a meditarnian, kinda like that "n" word. you know the one

didnt even buy me a drink-ron perlman

reply

A bit like the N word, but perhaps does not cause as much offense if used as a descriptive word, as opposed to calling someone a wog to their face. Eg. The title of this film "The Wog Boy". I can't imagine the n word being used like this.

reply

I'm guessing this film has been banned in England for it's title

Oh well, Whatever, Nevermind - Kurt Cobain.

reply

wog boy has twice screened on the BBC and is available on dvd in the UK (check out amazon uk) but funny thing is the BBC tv announcer didn't mention the title in preview before it started for fear of offending anyone or possibly for legal reasons.

reply

im a wog, and i dont mind the term. it only annoys me when its used in a deliberately rude manner.

reply

Yeah, generally means of Mediterranean descent, although it doesn't seem to have anything to do with this region historically (wikipedia says it was recorded as meaning 'germ' or 'parasite' in the 1940s). I can remember older generations (I'm young) using 'wog' to refer any immigrants in Australia, especially new ones.
The term now is much less controversial than the 'n' word, or many other ethnic slurs, although it can be used in quite offensive ways (example: 'wogs on handouts'). As a predominantly Anglo Australian, I wouldn't feel too uncomfortable about using the word in most contexts, and in most company (with the exception of groups of people probably looking for a fight anyway).

reply

In the UK it originally stood for "Westernised Oriental Gentleman" and usually referred to Indians.

In Australia it usually refers to non Asian non British groups common to your area. It used to be used commonly in my area for Serbs and Croatian.

A common saying in the 1980s was "If you have a wog friend you have a good friend."

reply

It's used traditionally only to refer to Greeks and Italians (also Spanish) as Australia has a large proportion of them. Ie, Melbourne, has almost 300,000 Greeks.
In recent times however, the term has extended to Turkish, Lebonese, etc.

reply

Greeks, Italians, and Former Yougouslav nationals.

reply

turks also fall under the banner of a wog

reply

Anyone not Aussie thinks their a wog these days, its really Greek and Italians

As well as the Balkan area, ex yugoslav.

You have to understand, these three fall under the same European region. Heck, even Greece is located inside the Balkanese view.

Greek & Italians hardly fill half of the 'Wog' population in Australia, let alone Europe itself. The only thing going for them is Historic monuments. Lose that, they're nothing much more but the same as everyone else.

But of course, you're moronic pathetic mind wouldn't come to terms with this, since you're so deluded from the reality.

Western Oriental Gentleman or Girl

reply

It was inicially a racial slur from britain against Africans. It reached Australia and was used against Indians. But then over time it eventually came to be used against Italians and Greeks. But no they use it for themselves. Kind of like owning the joke you know. People use to call me a WOG so I call myself one now.

I can't believe what i'm reading on here. believe me I don't go big on political correctness but the word "wog" sounds highly offensive to me. i can't believe they named a film using that word too.

it's just as offensive when used against Mediterranean people also...even if they use it themselves. black people use the N word but that's offensive too.
