Shivering

Could someone please explain the "shivering" that the men gave Curly and Laurey after the wedding? You know - with the straw babies and making the racket and such. I have never understood why they did this or what it was they were actually doing. Why does Ado Annie say "Oh, I wish you wouldn't [give them a shivering]"?

The men threw a "shivaree," not a "shivering." A shivaree is a loud, raucous greeting that a crowd of excited relative, friends and neighbors accord a newlywed couple right after the ceremony. Often, it can get wildly out of hand.
