Gloria Grahame

Although I agree that the 1999 version is excellent, I prefer the 1955 film mainly because of Gloria Grahame's performance. She is absolutely charming as Ado Annie. Gloria is one of the most unique actresses ever and this was quite a departure from her usual roles. Granted she was not a good singer, but her protrayal made up for it. This is a great example of risky, but inspired, casting.

I agree. Gloria Grahame was an excellent comic actress, and her ditzy kupie-doll was perfect for Ado Annie. A good actress in the role is more important than a good singer.

I'm sorry but I have to beg to differ. Although Gloria was a great actress her performance as a whole in Oklahoma was terrible. The singing would have been excusable if she could have acted out the songs at all. Her heart and soul were definately not in this movie. Her acting is totally wooden and her face is always totally expressionless. I actually find it painful to watch her as Ado Annie is my favourite character and she was totally massacred in the original.

What performance are you talking about? Not liking Gloria's performance is one thing. But saying she was wooden and expressionless is so wildly off-base, it's very puzzling.

She's tricky Oh, it's easy
What? I'm royalty, but don't tell your father.

Her face was not expressionless, it was subtle. Apparently you are not familiar with her work.

Absolutely! She had no sex appeal at all, in the bonnet she looked like a school mum. I saw the movie in my teens and was struck by the unatractivity of this reportedly hot girl. I was curious, if I´d understand better after years, but no: the same plain, awkward girl! But Gloria Grahame was so beautifull, and a good actress, so what went wrong? She was so lovely as the cunningly innocent Southern belle in The Bad and the Beautifull!
