Hugh V.S. Gordon

Does anyone here agree with me that Hugh Jackman did a better job potraying Curly than Gordon MacCrae did? Not only is he amazingly attractive, his singing voice is excellent, and he brought more depth and emotion to the character. Also, I found Josifina and Hugh had way better chemistry than Shirley did with Gordon!

Love to hear your thoughts though!!

actually, I found Gordon Macrae's performance as Curly to be better (for my taste)... though I LOVE Hugh Jackman, so it took me a long time to figure that one out for myself.

WOW!! are you kidding me. Are you talking about singing voices or acting the part?

In terms of tonal quality, I think Gordon has the better voice. But Hugh injects more emotion into his singing (and his voice is wonderful, too) and I just think he's an all around better actor. And I agree with you about Josefina and Hugh having better chemistry.

~You know, James....I was always better.

I totally, 100% love Hugh Jackman as Curley. I've always found Gordon MacCrae ti be annoying as Curley, but Hugh brings charm and excitement to the character; plus his voice is amazing!

Im sorry but there will just never be another Gordon MacCrae ever again. Hugh is a good singer but Gordon is in a league of all his own. He would be on my list of the top ten of greatest broadway singers of all time. I just dont see Hugh as a landmark of a performance because I could see someone else matching it.

I think they are both good in there own way; they are two very different performers who have two completly different styles in performing.

Gordon: Makes my toes curl when he sings. His voice has such a rich, velvety quality that is undeniably lovely.

Hugh: A good, strong voice. His stage precense is amazing and he is a joy to listen to.

I think my main observation about the two of them is that Gordon is the fantasy guy we all keep for when we are unhappy and/or bored. With Hugh, it is a less polished voice, but you can imagine him singing around the house in real life, not just a fantasy.

I prefer Hugh's performance on the DVD to Gordon's in the original movie, but if I was putting a soundtrack or cast recording on to listen to I'd choose the original film soundtrack. Hugh has a hard-working voice and acts the part beautifully but Gordon's voice was in a different league.

All in all I prefer Hugh, though.

When I first saw the 1955 movie I thought that Gordon Macrae had a wonderful voice and still do. He was also great in "Carousel". I also loved Hugh Jackman as Curley. I find it almost impossible to choose the best version as they were both fantastic in their own way. Gordon's playing of Curley may have been quieter and gentler, but I agree that Hugh brought more gutsy depth to the character and he sings well too.

I see it as they are both really good. I don't really think about them side by side. I think they both have really good acting qualities.

OK, first off, I was VERY surprised at Hugh's voice! He's a beautiful singer! Secondly, Hugh does a better job than Gordon MacRae.
