Why is this rated better than Soul Reaver 2?

I was shocked by how many of the hardcore followers of the series rave on about Soul Reaver 1 after I finally played it. The story (the one we ended up with, not the one that was originally meant for the game) was extremely lacking. The gameplay was glitchy and had those dreadful box puzzles. The 'world' that was created, another praise I'm hearing....come on now, it was generic as could be. The complete void of a map and vague directions just made everything in the game seem a tedius chore, with no payoff at the end. I prefered Blood Omen so much to this it's not even funny.

And it doesn't even stand close to Soul Reaver 2. Yet it's pulling an 8.9 while SR2 gets an 8. Glancing at the GameFAQs.com reviews and gamerankings.com, the descrepency of SR1 being more highly regarded as 2 remains there as well.

Am I missing something? SR2 is one of the most satisfying games I've played in a long time, while I had to force myself to beat 1.

SR2 is probably voted down by people who like lotza random killing and hate it when the storyline gets in the way. Unfortunately, it does sort of overpower the gameplay in that respect, but that's a good thing for people who like an enthralling, epic plot and don't mind giving up a little mindless, repetative hack 'n slash to get it.

It got nothing less than a 10 from me!

You can't make me without involving the authorities.

Besides, mine is a semi-legitimate opinion no matter what the forum. hehe

I agree. Soul Reaver was decent, but felt more like what you have to play through to get to Soul Reaver II. And Blood Omen is my top favourite of them all.

SRII is the fulfillment of the story of SRI (which was cool, but short), I'd say it's as good or par here. I'm giving SRI credit for one of my favourite game intros ever as well as the fun confrontations with your "brothers" and that Kain (your character one game ago) is the demonic bad guy. Sweet.

Gameplay in II is just like I, but smoother and more streamlined as are, like you said, control and mapping/ directions.

You're right. I love SRI, but SRII is just so much better.

I always felt SR2 was the better game of SR 1 and 2. The story was great, the pacing good and the gameplay/combat/puzzles seemed to fit into the world rather than feel forced. Definately a good game.

I think though most vote this as better just down to more having played this one. I remember back in the day when this was being made it was hyped up in practically all the magazines here. I'm sure that got a lot of people to play the game...

But yeah overall i think i still find BO the best of the series.
