Best in the series

This game is fantastic, storyline, graphics (for its time), music, dialogue, everything its just awesome :p

I liked the fact that unlike SR2 and Defiance the story focused on Kain being the bad guy, something the later games toyed with and in my opinion weakened the story. And they made the Elder God a baddie too :( He was cool :( (R.I.P Tony Jay)

Somehow I think the rawness of the PS1 graphics added to the authentic feel to this game. I can't really describe it, its like it didnt need anything added if you get me......I know I'm talking poo....or maybe im not..... :o

Also I think the dialogue in the other games were a tad hard to keep up with, a bit confusing at times, unlike this one which keeps you intrigued with every sentance.

PLUS! In the later games they pretty much just turned the series into a button-basher saga, all you do it wave the reaver around dammit!!!!!

I remember when I got the demo of this game in '99 (10years ago now :o shocking) and I couldnt stop playing it and then I got the game for christmas that year and I didnt sleep for like a month 'coz I was that hooked on playing it! :D

There are millions of other reasons why i believe this game to be flawless next to the other games in the series so leave a comment with your own thoughts about why this game is awesome too!!!

I have yet to pick up Defiance (it sits on my shelf taunting me! Not until I finish Soul Reaver 2, Defiance...but then...and soon...) but Blood Omen 1, the original, is my favourite thus far.

Yes, on counts of everything. Gameplay was totally different, more Legend of Zelda for SNES than Legend of Zelda for N64. To each his own, but I love that gameplay. It really felt like a perfect redo of a classic gaming style fused into a next generation system. Enough puzzles to keep me happy and combat was more weapon-based, which I like. SR and subsequent titles feel like dodge, attack, dodge, attack, but BO had more strategy.

Storyline, I feel like this one is one of the tightest and most intriguing, right down to the themes established for the rest of the series and the hero/antihero shuffling Kain does (neither good nor bad, often both at once).

Graphics are decent, music is atmospheric, and the game's attitude reeks of Gothic substance and the macabre. It set a tone I don't think they completely recaptured and I liked the focus on Vampires, as well as the Vampiric powers: closer to Bram Stoker's demonic forces with a fae-like glamour and magic spells which controlled the weather.

Ironically, I think it's the hardest to find of them all now.

I do love the Soul Reaver entries, but Blood Omen will always be my favourite.

Soul Reaver 1 was a button basher too, though...

No it wasn't, you don't even make an argument for that at all... I wonder why. The LoK fanboys will never let it go with Blood Omen... anyway, yes, very well said bradders601. One thing this place needs are fans with a brain... those that can think.
