Music - similarities to Schindler's list?

One of the predominant themes by Hoerner sounds to me to be very very simliar to the main theme from Schindler's list?

You can hear it most distinctly during the scene where Tanya goes down at the docks.

Anybody else notice this?

Actually I recognised music from avatar very frequently. I saw it before this so I recognised it more. It's a shame this composer doesn't have much originality as titanic was also similar to avatar.

reply

DId any of you also hear music that sounded like the main battle theme in Troy? I hear Troy aswell as Schindler's List, strange.

Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody

James Horner is infamous for reusing music.

Here you can hear the trumpet motif from Enemy at the Gates,Troy,Willow & Avatar.

And yes, I also heard the Schindler's list similarities.

I still like him though.

Well that demands the question: what composer did not reuse and rework his ideas?
Bernard Herrman? Hans Zimmer?
They all do.
Or tell me of one who doesnt.

reply

true. but the trouble with horner is he always refused to admit he ever did. even after being sued and losing to copyright holders.

if you were to believe james hoerner, he is the only composer ever who didn't.

The "trumpet motif" you point out is an ornament traditionally used in baroque music and in opera in all eras. It is called a gruppetto and it is not at all fair for you to put a composer down because he likes to employ gruppettos. You see, such ornaments are small details, they do not constitute thematic material. This is why it is wrong to call it a "motif" -- it is not thematic, it is an ornamented gesture.

People should learn about music before making such accusations.

I don't even like James Horner, but here I am "defending" him, because your belief that writing gruppettos is "reusing music" is just ridiculous.

reply

Yes I heard the similarity, but it is beautiful music.

So similar that each time I'm trying to whistle Ennemy at the Gate theme, I'm confusing with Schindler's list !

And for Troy I didn't notice, but I like the music even more. Very epic.

The same theme can be listened in "The Perfect Storm" from Wolfgang Petersen.

reply

Horner does that. He's always copying others works. Bit of a hack if you ask me.

"Hitler! C'mon, I'll buy you a glass of lemonade."

Funny, I found it partly reused from Mask of Zorro, where he takes his mask off.

Same group of chords.

I see where you are coming from, but I think 'hack' is a strong and rather unfair word. Horner did PLENTY of original stuff that was fantastic. I don't hear much of anything from 'Star Trek II' in either his previous work, or his following works. That score was amazing. Along with Braveheart and Titanic, my favorite of his works.

reply

He OBVIOUSLY stole material from the work of others.

This is from a game (Karateka) back in 1984 (before Willow)

The music in this film is TERRIBLE. Overbearing, overblown, and trying desperately to convey drama and 'epic scale' where there is none.

I don't hear any similarities to the Schindler's List themes, though.

^ I disagree with the person above. I think the music really captures the essence of the movie. I could listen to the song Tania from the end credits all day.

Watching it right now and completely agree. I blame the director though, it's his call. Russian choir in a "Russian" war drama... geesus, can it get any more bland or predictable?

reply

I thought the same thing. Very similar.
