Made Me Think Of MY NAME IS EARL

I just saw BABY and while I can't seem to find any cast/crew parallels (except both productions shared a GRIP!- fact found at IMDB) they seem to have a similar tone and locale. The narration and accents are similar. Do they take place in the same place? Is EARL somehow a spin-off of this? Or related in any way?

Yeah, it kind of reminded me of Earl as well. Odd that. Don't think there's any connection.
