What was Dar's staff supposed to be made out of?

Was that ever mentioned?

reply

I always thought it was bone. If not that, then maybe stone.

reply

I always thought it was some kind of wood.

reply

Never mentioned. Looks like wood to me. Staffs are traditionally made of wood. A stone staff would be stupidly heavy and uselessly slow as a weapon, and would take a LONG TIME to be sculpted. A bone staff would shatter in combat. Pretty sure it wasn’t adamantium. Note bene: I’m talking about the movie. I’ll never watch this TV show.

reply

Well, the show was decent.

I tried the show a few months ago and I wasn't able to get into it. It's a little dated but that usually doesn't bother me. I thought it was very guy-oriented and although I love action-adventure I'm female, so maybe that was why? Is it worth trying it out again?

reply

I watched the show on TV from 1999 to 2001 after Xena because I just love genera shows like this. The lead character is male, but more female warriors and sorceresses are on the the show as it progresses. In particular, a female warrior named Arina (played by Marjean Holden) is in 22 episodes of the show and she is a very interesting character. I wish she could have spun off into her own series, but by the time Beastmaster ended the market for action/fantasy syndicated shows just disappeared. I guess the networks just weren't making that much money.

this is a link to a dissertation on this very topic! You can read the whole thing, assuming the link works. I feel the same way. I love the action-adventure genre! Back in the late 99s early 00s, I would start at 10 am and watch the whole action adventure list all the way through to Highlander reruns at 4 pm! First Hercules, then Xena, then Relic Hunter, then I think it was Stargate SG-1, then Deep Space 9, and then maybe it was Highlander. At some point original episodes of Hercules ended and maybe that's when Beastmaster began? I can't remember. Anyway, those were the days. I really enjoyed my action-adventure Saturdays!

The dissertation is about the effect of something called the Syn-Fin rule (or maybe it's the Fin-Syn rule) on independent tv programming. Apparently, when that rule ended in the mid 90s, it created an incentive for networks to own their own programming instead of buying syndicated programming. The dissertation talks about how this gradually resulted in a decrease in scripted shows produced by independent operations and an increase in... Reality Shows!

Stone would be certain to shatter as well. It's hard, but it's brittle, and a staff made out of it wouldn't bend or flex, just break. Wood and metal both have flex and make better weaponry for this reason. So, not only is stone stupid heavy, but it would probably turn into fragments with the first heavy strike.

Gotta be something like a sacred rare tree. It could definitely be some kind of tusk from a sacred elephant or something.
