Barry Manilow ...
When they say "his name is Barry Manilow" and they laugh ... what is so funny about that? And what is a rain check?

Barry Manilow is the name of a singer, I'm not sure what genre you would classify his music as, but he is not considered cool by college kids.
A rain check means postponing a date.
What are you doing, pig?
Do you really give a fig, pig?
And what's your favourite kind of gig, pig?
Barry Manilow,
or the black and white Minstrel show?
rain check is something that stores used to offer when they had a sale on something but were out of stock. You could ask for a rain check (which was usually a little store slip that had a place to fill in the item and price), then come back and buy it at the sale price once they got it in stock, even if the sale was over. I am sure some stores still do it. The phrase has since come to be used in just meaning to skip something now and do it later.
shareHow do they know that Manilow is Barry's last name just because his Grandparents are called Manilow???
Maybe they are his mom's parents...in which case his last name is unlikely to be Manilow. So in reality there is a 50% chance his name is Barry Manilow.
I know it was you Fredo. You broke my heart, you broke my heart!
better than 50% if Barry is the result of inbreeding (which he might be, just look at him).
I always wondered how they assumed Manilow was his last name, you're right that the chance is only 50/50. However, Rueben kind of responded like he all ready knew his last name. IMO.
The others hit on it, Barry Manilow to college kids would be very uncool.
Manilow would kind of be in the same category as Tom Jones, Wayne Newton, Neil Diamond. They don't all sing the same type of music, but you could classify it as adult contemporary....something only people 50, 55 or 60 would like. Like in the Fresh Prince, Carlton use to do that dance by Tom Jones (where he swings his hips around), and he was laughed at all the time.
Similar thing with "Barry Manilow". Very uncool if you're 21-25.
