List of good remakes

This one is copied from "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud". If anyone loves this film (as I do), he/she should try and watch the original from which Karz was made. The original is sans melodrama (as is obvious for Hollywood movies vis-a-vis their Indian remakes) but is chilling to the bone.

You won't get the magic of Kishore Kumar & RD, though !!

As for a list of worthwhile remakes, I liked the following:

Sarkar [Godfather]
Ek Haseena Thi [If Tomorrow Comes]
Josh [West Side Story]
Parichay [The Sound of Music]
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar [Breaking Away]
Agneepath [Scarface]
Main Azaad Hoon [Meet John Doe]
Ghulam [On the Waterfront]
Dil Hai ke Manta Nahin [It happened one night]
Satte pe Satta [Seven Brides for Seven Brothers]
Pehla Nasha [Body Double]
Munnabhai MBBS [Patch Adams]
Agni Sakshi [Sleeping with the Enemy]

can you suggest some more ?

The irony here is that The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) was itself inspired by the Hindi film Madhumati (1958), directed by Bimal Roy and written by Ritwik Ghatak. It appears that Karz (1980) was inspired by both these movies. In turn, both The Reincarnation of Peter Proud and Karz inspired another American movie Chances Are (1989), starring Robert Downey Jr.

By the way, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) is not a remake. Just because it has some similarities to Patch Adams (1998), that does not make it a remake. The overall premise of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (about a gangster masquerading as a doctor) is completely different from Patch Adams (about an unconventional medical student). In addition, Ek Haseena Thi (2003) also cannot be called a remake if it was inspired by a TV series.

A few other good remakes or inspired films I would recommend are:

Do Bigha Zamin (1953) - inspired by Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948)
The Love Bug (1968) - inspired by Ritwik Ghatak's Ajantrik (1958)
Sholay (1975) - inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954)
Star Wars (1977) - based on Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress (1958)
E.T. (1982) - based on Satyajit Ray's script for The Alien (1967)
The Fly (1986) - remake of The Fly (1958)
Baazigar (1993) - inspired by A Kiss Before Dying (1991)
12 Monkeys (1995) - inspired by French film La Jetée (1962)
The Lion King (1995) - remake of 1960s Japanese anime Kimba the White Lion
Judwaa (1997) - remake of Twin Dragons (1992) starring Jackie Chan
Ring 2 (1999) - a re-interpretation of Rasen (1998)
Planet of the Apes (2001) - remake of Planet of the Apes (1968)
Devdas (2002) - adapted from Bengali novel Devdas (1917) + influences from previous film version Devdas (1955)
The Ring (2002) - remake of Hideo Nakata's Ring (1998)
The Time Machine (2002) - remake of The Time Machine (1960)
Koi Mil Gaya (2003) - based on Satyajit Ray's The Alien (1967) and Bankubabur Bandhu (1962)
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - remake of Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Shaun of the Dead (2004) - parody of Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Black (2005) - adapted from Helen Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life (1903)
Hitch (2005) - inspired by Hindi film Chhoti Si Baat (1975)
King Kong (2005) - remake of King Kong (1933)
The Dark Knight (2008) - remake of Batman (1989)
