harelips - what do you tink? (possible SPOILERS)

at some point, dora (the smart girl) says s.th. like this (see also memorable quotes):

"Or if I'm lucky, my male counterpart, an obese man or guy with a harelip, will invite me to coffee; and we'll pretend to love each other and tie the knot because we're so desperately afraid of growing old alone."

now i have a friend who has a "harelip" or cleft palate and i found that remark somewhat offensive.
but since that guy is my friend (and i've known him for a long time), i can't really be neutral about that.

so, here's my question: are harelips really that ugly to you?

well, my friend is a male one, as in the movie.
(i. e. the girl in the movie suggests that she'll meet a man with a harelip) so...i wasn't particularly referring to women...

however, do you think you can compare that (harelip-men with h-women) or did you just mix it up accidently?

besides, i think my friend won't judge the movie on that single line...but on the other hand, i haven't yet thought about showing him the movie...

what do you mean "Knowing him..." - is he that 'obsessed' with it?

okay, ...i see

well, misunderstood that, i guess...

May be a bit off-topic, but doesn't seem a bit hypocritical of her? How she complains that she's ugly - so she has to settle for an ugly guy. Should we feel sorry for whoever that guy would be, considering she won't love him just because he's not great looking...much like her. I digress.

I don't think your friends would be overly-sensitive about it, unless they have a problem getting women solely because of the harelip, I doubt that either would really judge the movie based on a line that's not particularly harsh, compared to the things that James DeBello says throughout the film. I have a good friend with a bit of a harelip and has never had a problem with the ladies.

I don't know if it's off topic, but you take the words right out of my mouth.
(Although, to be honest, so far, i haven't given this problem that much thought, you're perfectly right...)

She complains that people only look for superficial beauty - and then does the very same thing by complaining that she'll never get a good looking guy.

However, she does have a point, I think. And how could she express that without being superficial herself? What's your opinion?

I just noticed the mention of Rod and I couldn't help but laugh at the irony of this topic.

Considering how the ending turned out, it seems that Dora didn't mind hooking up with a guy with Hypospadias. Oh well, at least they're both happy.

I guess even though it may be hypocritical, it's true I guess. Maybe she's a little more upset at the fact that she is less-than-desirable, rather than the fact that she'll have to settle for an ugly mate.

It's something that's happened to most of us - where we sought after an amazingly beautiful person, but were upset because he/she wouldn't look past our looks - because we like to think we have more to offer. Yet their beauty is what makes us long for them. We're all hypocrites in our own way.

But I wasn't too upset when Dora ended up with Rod at the end.

Truthful answer: Of course they are.
PC answer: No. Besides, I don't notice such things.

LOl, i guess in truth thyre not desirable, but actually there was this guy at my old school who had a harelip, and he was still hot, and considered hot by most people, it kinda looked cute on him, and he had a lisp because of it too, but he was still popular and well liked.
