what did you think of the CGI

I thought they were great
how bout you??

reply

Agreed. I don't really like the Didelphodon, though; they didn't get the hair right at all (I suppose it was too complicated at the time).

Now re-watching it, I think that the animation is superb! Although, it could be better but the makers didn't have a Jurassic park sized budget.

Concur Vihktor. In the odd place it's noticable, but not enough to impact overly.

Superb achievement and something the BBC should be proud of.

The animation and the combination with real footage worked out pretty well.

I remember an interview with one of the creators when this came out, and they asked him whether or not they had considered working with the people from Jurassic Park.
The answer was "no". Not only did they not have the money, those guys were too perfectionist. A tiny imperfection in the animation and they try to solve it, even if it takes months. And these BBC people couldn't afford that.

How much is 6 million pounds in euros? (or dollars, it doesn't matter)

That would be about 8,880,000 Euros or 11,320,000 US dollars.
Note that these currencies constantly change.

This page has all the currencies plus a handy convertor :

Why do you need to know?

Just curious; I didn't know the stock exchange so 6 million pounds didn't really say much to me. Thanks for the link, by the way.

The CGI was good... just that if it were done these days... it would have been alot better... I wish for a re-done CGI... but that's just my wishful thinking.

reply

It was good enough, but still clearly CG.

Ironic that with a much smaller budget the BBC created much more realistic dinosaurs than in Jurassic Park - and a much better storyline too.

American money is no substitute for intelligence or creativity.

Ha, interesting to read my 10 year old reaction. Have given the series quite a few rewatches since then, and each time, the CGI has shown its age more and more.

While there are people out there who condemned the show's effects for various reasons (like that the CGI appears too shiny, most animals are just the same model copy&pasted, there's too much jiggling going on, etc), I think these are fairly forgivable given the software's age, the budget and time constraints. Yeah, a lot of the models look poor in closeups, so the crew could have been more careful with using those. But the effects do benefit a lot from being put into real-life backgrounds, even if the composition suffers here and there from minor blunders, like objects or animals being "cut off" near the screen's edges or foreground plants being blatant copies. Granted, this is stuff you only notice if you're as obsessive of a watcher as me.

All the damn clipping is bothersome, though. I'm not just talking about the usual "limb clips through other limb" sorta stuff, but a lot of the CGI animals seem to be coming apart at the seams at every step. I wonder how the CGI models were even constructed. Were the limbs separate meshes, explaining why there's "seams" on their hips and shoulders?

The CGI has aged a bit, but in 1999, it was mesmerizing. To this day, it remains one of my favorite pieces of film.

reply

I grew up with this series and it maybe the nostalgia ,but the effects have aged very well to be honest.
