Series 2 on DVD?

I love this series and have watched the first one over and over again...

But when will the BBC release series 2? First it was September 2003, then early 2004 and now they're saying April 2005! What's going on?

If anyone has Series 2 either on VHS or DVD, please x10,000 get in touch!

Cheers

reply

People Like Us - Series 2 is out in the UK in April 2005! A few online stores already have it listed and give the same release date: check kelkoo.co.uk.

Just 3 months to go then!

reply

Yes, I see Tesco says it's April 2005. but are they to be trusted? Play.com, Amazon.co.uk - and every other reliable retailer simply doesn't know when it'll be out for sure.

I even wrote the BBC about this, and they didn't have a clue.

I have a feeling we're in for a very, very long wait. As usual.

reply

Weeeeellllll....

As per bast**d usual, the ****ers have pushed the release date back YET again... and by "pushed back" I mean "erased, vanished, zilch, who the Heck knows"

Tesco are no longer sayign April 2005, in fact, they're not saying anything at all. Play are about as useless as a phart in a jacuzzi and no-one in cyber space has any idea what I'm talking about. Kelkoo insists there's only one series and that's that.

We've got more chance of re-filming Series 2 ourselves on MiniDV with our own mates as actors than we do of ever seeing series 2 on DVD.

The BBC's automated response system is becoming repetitive and boring: I know what it's going to say before I even open the email. I just want a simple straight answer. Is it a copyright issue? Are they having trouble clearing licences? Is Chris Langham not happy with his haircut in episode 4 and threatening to sue if they ever release? Hey, if you love this series like i do, and know the answer - or if you work for the BBC - please write back!! Write Something! Anything!!!

Hell, make s**t up, I don't care - even if it's the lamest excuse under the sun, there's gotta be someone who can attone for this incredulous stupidity.

reply

How frustrating?!

I only saw about 5 minutes of the second series when it was originally on TV. Why does it take SO LONG for shows to be transferred to DVD?

I have tried ebay to find anyone who has it on video, but with no luck so far.

The delay is astonishing, considering that Series 2 has been available in DVD in Portugal for several years now.

reply

Portugal?! Is it dubbed or with subtitles? i have an unfailing ability to track down and then purchase at an extortionate cost rare/deleted DVDs only to find that within weeks or even days they pop on t.v. or flooding eBay or Amazon. Most recently I paid - no it's too embarrassing - for a Willo the Wisp DVD that has now been reissued.

Happy to work my inverted magic on People Like Us Series 2 if you can tell me the Portuguese supplier...

According to sendit.com the DVD was released on 1st September 2003 and has since been deleted which means that the likelihood of it appearing on our shelves is pretty slim. However if it were released at this time it seems a fair assumption that you would be able to find a copy of it second-hand somewhere and having checked on ebay, amazon and various other sites there is no sign of the DVD anywhere. Also, the BBC, I noticed, were repeating the 1st series on BBC Four last year I think over Christmas, so I waited until the end of its run in the hope that the second would be shown, it wasn’t. I don’t think the BBC will be releasing it at all, it seems unlikely given that they’re not even prepared to repeat it. Very unfair as this is the second and last series that was filmed. They wouldn’t be able to do this with something like The Office or Fawlty Towers of which both have a similar length run of twelve episodes, it’s just that People Like Us is not as popular as these shows so the fans don’t hold as much weight. They should have released both series at once, but the BBC are crap at releasing anything. The only reason the likes of Goodnight Sweetheart and Bugs have been released on DVD is thanks largely to Revelation Films, both releases had nothing whatsoever to do with the BBC. As far as this elusive second series is concerned I wouldn’t hold your breath for a release, unless Revelation Films gets a hold of it.

I literally bought Peter's Frends on DVD and watched it in the past couple of days and GUESS WHAT? it's on C4 tonight. Obviously. And I didn't even mention about the Godfather DVD collection - but I wasn't so fussed about that as I bought them for the commentary and extras, and watching those films over three weeks with advert breaks on Channel 5 is sacrilege.

So if anyone wants to sell me a copy of People Like Us Series 2 for a stupid price my powers are clearly not waning.

Surely the success of The Thick of It will encourage an interest in Chris Langham's back catalogue of work? Hope springs eternal.

not quite the same but they are repeating some of the radio episodes on BBC 7 so you can listen online - current one is the Hotel Manager.

reply

Nah, sendit.com are lying. Basically, I've ben keeping a real close eye on this series 2 debate since they threatened to release it in 2003.

I think we should just give up.

reply

I don't agree that we should give up, we can't allow the BBC to get away with things like this. We pay a licence fee therefore we virtually own the BBC without the British taxpayer the BBC would be nothing. If the people of this country decided to no longer pay the licence fee as one, there would be nothing the BBC could do about it or the government: you can't fine 66 million people. Unless the BBC get better at DVD releases and TV shows then we should use our power as taxpayers to boycott the fee. There’s nothing but rubbish on the channels nowadays, the showing of ‘Sweeney Todd’ in January marking a new low. Why commission a show on one of London’s most famous serial killers and then turn the maniac he was into a victim and a philosopher? Because they’re the BBC and can do anything they want and nobody says a word that’s why. Well it is about time that the BBC realised that they’re supposed to be a customer service medium and are supposed to go out of their way to please the consumer not irritate them. And it’s not releasing a lot of certain DVDs that is just one of the hundreds of ways they irritate the public.
We should be demanding the release of the second and final series of ‘People Like Us’, not politely asking when it’s going to be released. This is what’s wrong with us as British nowadays we never make a stand, we’re to PC, well I for one will be standing against the bureaucracy of the BBC. They are exactly what’s wrong with this country there is too much bureaucratic behaviour going on, I think it has something to do with being too closely tied with Europe but that’s a separate issue don’t even get me started on why Britain shouldn’t be a member of the EU. Anyway, the second series of ‘People Like us’ will come out I for one will make sure of that, you see I don’t give up that easy and neither should anyone else who want’s a release. I urge you to make a stand and show the BBC that we will not be pushed around.

reply

Being from down under, I can't comment on the BBC local politics but I would guess there is an contractual issues between various parties surrounding the 'People Like Us' circus.
It seems quite similar to when I went and asked around to try and obtain a copy of "The Man from Auntie" years ago only to be told that it wouldn't be released due to contract and royalty differences between the BBC and the production company that Ben Elton was contracted to. It was, at the time, never to be released until a settlement could be agreed on. I don't know if this was ever sorted but I was informed years later, (not confirmed) that Ben Elton was not too keen to 'deal' with the BBC in later productions. You won't generally get this info out of the BBC as it would, naturally enough, want to keep a good and happy profile out in the public domain. "Dirty Laundry?...... No Sir!....."
So I'm always wary of info relating to dates of release etc. but still ever hopeful that the BBC can provide the market with some hard details relating to Series 2 for I too long for the DVD so as to be able to relieve the poor old VHS copy.
For what it is worth, the dvd no. is "BBCDVD1231".
Google that and see what yo can do!

WOOF WOOF!

The two series are available quite legally from blueplanetdvd (search for this in google). Don't take any notice of the sleeve - the pack contains a dvd for each series. You can turn off the Portuguese subtitles by pressing the subtitle button on the remote control.

reply

that's very good news - moomin-4, have you bought it from them? don't mind ending up with two lots of series one (i've already got the BBC release) by buying this edition. many thanks!

is your sig from the moomintrolls children's series? i used to love them!

Bernard: (to a group of skinheads) Which one of you bitches wants to dance?

reply

Yes, I have bought it from blueplanet and and it's absolutely fine. Very quick too.

Yes, the Moomins are my mentors!

reply

I live in Australia, ordered it from BluePlanet and got it in the post within two weeks.

It all works fine.

reply

Yep - ordered 'Series 1 special edition' from BluePlanet and series 2 is all there and complete - brilliant. Can't seem to turn off subtitles mind....

reply

I'd also recommend anyone looking for Series 2 to order 'Series 1 Special Edition' from BluePlanet (Portugal). They posted it to me in Australia and both series were included. I'm delighted to finally see Series 2!!! The episodes are all in their original English - there's no spoken Portuguese, just Portuguese subtitles at the bottom, which I don't find distracting.

As of Jan 2007, Blue Planet doesn't seem to have it. At least I can't get their site to find it! Am I missing something?

reply

Blue Planet no longer sells the People Like Us DVD as the product has now been deleted in Portugal, the last copy that I have seen was on ebay and it went for £31. It means that there is no longer any way of getting a hold of series 2 unless the BBC release it, which is even more unlikely given the recent allegations against Chris Langham. Even if there was no legitimate reason for the series not to be released a few years ago, the BBC can certainly use recent news as an excuse for not releasing the series now. This gives more weight to the argument that they should have released the two series together in the first place. Apparently the reason it hasn't been released in the UK is due to a music licensing issue which seems absurd as the BBC were the only company involved in the making and release of the program, there must be an internal row with the music producer of the series. These licensing problems off course didn't affect the Portuguese release but now even that is off the market. I suggest that if we want a release in this country it might be an idea to send a petition to the BBC maybe that might force them to try to resolve the legal issues that are preventing the series from being released. They would certainly be trying to resolve similar issues if they had affected the release of The Office or other popular series. But it seems that they are not prepared to do this for a lesser known series or at least not without pressure from the public, which may force them to do something to resolve the problem.

reply

That's probably exactly what is happening. It's not the first case of this happening, and probably won't be the last. This exact same issue occured with at least the first series of I'm Alan Partridge (I have the original first issue release which was subsequently recalled a few days later, and it's worth a mint right now). The Armando Iannucci shows from 2001 went through the same tripe, as well. I'd say Armando and People Like Us are roughly about as well known as one another, so why cast PLU into the parapit?

As for PLU S2 - I don't recall there being any "music" other than the theme song in any of the episodes.

Also, agreed, perhaps the BBC don't want to release becuase of langham's currently legal troubles. But then again, the narcissist inside me thinks "Actually, isn't this the BEST time to release it?". Another great reason to do so is that David Tennant is the star of Episode 4, The Actor (he's hot property right now as Doctor Who, as you probably know.

I can't think of a better time to release S2, really. Still, the original release date was Setpember 2003. Nigh-on four years ago. Speaks volumes.

reply

Firstly I would point out that the music licensing problem with People Like Us is put forward as the reason behind the series not being released on wikipedia that coupled with poor sales of the first this is all according to the wikipedia site. Secondly I personally haven't seen the Armando Iannucci Shows and so cannot comment on the shows quality and whether it should be released. However the Armando Iannucci Shows have now been released and are available to buy on Play and Amazon, so what ever problems this series may have had they have now been resolved it seems.
I should also point out that Operation Good Guys a show that is similar to PLU which in fact aired before PLU had similar problems with its music on series 3 but the full series of 1, 2 and 3 has still been released. I have the Operation Good Guys DVD and on its sleeve it states that "for contractual reasons certain music edits have been made on series 3" If the BBC were prepared to do this with OGG why are they not with PLU. I can only conclude that the music licensing problems are a front and that possibly the only reason the series hasn't been released is due to the poor sales of the first. But then why haven’t they repeated the second series despite having repeated the first on BBC Four. There is much more to the People Like Us fiasco than meets the eye.
Thirdly, if it weren’t for the first series getting a release, which is still out it’s not as though this has been removed due to poor sales or other reasons like for example Rentaghost, it would be like every other problem. The only show I can think of similar is Birds of a Feather, which has had its first series released (and is still out) but not subsequent series, however this series was not released by the BBC itself and therefore has to go through different avenues to get a release. Also far more of Birds of a Feather was made so its second series is not its last. Whereas PLU only had twelve episodes made and its second series IS its last. In fact the reason why this problem is so annoying is not that the second hasn’t been released but rather because the first has been. It means that the BBC did not do their homework on the second series to see if that could be released prior to the releasing of the first. If they had, the problems would have been ironed out before the release of the first and both series could have been released together. It is common sense that if you are releasing series 1 of a series you will be releasing series 2 so as usual the BBC isn’t thinking ahead. It seems therefore that the first was released for releasing sake, possibly just to test the market, the lack of extras also shows that no effort whatsoever was put into its release. This is the reason behind myself concentrating on People Like Us it is this lack of thought and common sense from the BBC that has resulted in the fiasco, something which could have easily been avoided. That is of course provided that there really is a music licence issue with the series if there isn’t then there is something much more sinister going on.
Lastly, I totally agree that this is the best time to release the second series with Tennant’s recent successes and Langham’s allegations, there certainly would be a lot of hype surrounding its release. Perhaps the BBC should give it serious thought as they might have a potential gold mine on their hands.

reply

Yes, I see what you're saying, and I agree with virtually all of it.

Now IS the best time to release PLU S2, because it'll never get more attention at any other time. Also, Chris Langham is particular hot property with Iannucci's The Thick of It, in which he won a best actor award (at BAFTA I think)

I am convinced that it's a legal issue which the BBC are unwilling to resolve due to poor sales of Series 1. I think. I dunno how well series 1 did.

I wrote to the BBC several times regarding S2s release, and all I ever got was an automated reply saying they'd get back to me. Did they feck.

Also, if Operation Good Guys can get released eventually, I don't see why PLU can't get the same treatment. I agree that the lack of extras is a good indication of how in love they were with the first series. I personally ahve given up hope. Maybe in five year's time, when I've totally gone off it, I may very well find it in a Woolworth's bargain bucket and think... "ohhh, well I never!"

Thank God for bittorrent.

I quote verbatim here from the BBC Prime TV website FAQ section.
The question asked is "Where is Kiss Me Kate"
Answer: " This programme along with any other programmes featuring Mr Chris Langham has now been removed from the BBC Prime schedule following his recent court trial.
Following the guilty verdict, we felt it only appropriate to remove any and all programmes featuring Mr Langham. We hope you can understand this decision and apologise for any inconvenmience this may have caused."

So you can forget any DVD from the BBC in the future!!
If you look at Langhams filmography on imdb thats a hell of a lot of content to dissappear from the BBC collection - Not the 9 o'clock news. Q3, Q5 Q6 etc.
I wonder how zealous the BBC will be.....

chandler - released by who and how can we get it?? Give us a website please.

It's been released here in Australia (R4) on DVD -- not sure why, when so many other countries haven't got it -- but I'm not complaining !!

Both seasons are at a very reduced price at the moment. You can find them here:

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Just happened to stumble across the BBC DVD of series 2 on Amazon (I got series 1 when it came out had almost given up waiting for a S2 release). Seems it was released last year (evidently to little fanfare cos it completely passed me by!).

Currently cheaper at Play.com though
