The producers obviously wanted a box office "name" in one of the three main roles--no one outside the UK has heard of Jimi Mistry, and Neve Campbell has kinda fallen off the map in the past few years, mainly by choice, as she decided to concentrate on challenging indie-film roles rather than do "Scream VII." That leaves Kreuk, who clearly was cast only for the marquee value of her name--she can't act, and her ethnicity and appearance are totally wrong for the role.
So who would have been better? A lot of people have suggested known Bollywood stars, but that kind of misses the point; this film is being made for a North American mass-market audience, and, aside from _maybe_ Aishwarya Rai (who is surely too old for this part in any case) no Bollywood actresses are known enough in North America.
But there is one performer who does come to mind. Consider this:
1. She is a terrific actress with amazing and proven dramatic range.
2. She is reasonably well-known on both sides of the Atlantic, having starred in one of the biggest sleeper hits of the past few years and (currently) in one of the most popular TV shows in the world.
3. She is of authentic South Asian descent.
4. She looks considerably younger than her 30 years, and could surely pull off the role of Naseem.
5. She is even from one of the contries behind Partition, a British-Canadian co-production.
I refer, of course, to Parminder Nagra, star of Bend it Like Beckham and ER. This casting choice would have seemed like a no brainer to me. Whaddya think, guys?
PS: Is it just me, or does director Vic Sarin's filmography not make him exactly seem like one of the shining lights of the Canadian film industry? "Left Behind: The Movie", anyone? Kreuk or no, I have a LOT of trouble beliving Partition will be any good . . .
