Seriously? Was that ending necessary?

I just finished watching this movie thanks to Netflix...probably wouldn't have known it had existed otherwise. Absolutely loved it.. except that ending!

Seriously after everything, did they have to kill him??? I know that sad movies get more attention/awards, etc but they were so painfully close... Had gone through so much... The ending almost ruined the movie for me. I was just annoyed that they decided to kill him off after everything he went through for her.

Beautifully acted, shot - loved the story, the historical setting and conflicts... all great. But annoying ending almost contrived to drive up award/oscar attention (that didn't even happen, it seems). Wish they could go back and re-do the ending...

Totally agree with you there ... no need at all to kill Gian, and by doing so it ruined the movie for me. Any messages that the film was trying to make about cultural differences and intolerance could still have been delivered without having to resort to this most disappointing ending.

I'm not suggesting that all movies should have a happy ending. Circumstances and situations are different for various types of stories, and sometimes it just feels right ( if not cheery ) for a movie to finish on a downer ... but that was certainly not the case here.

Thanks for nothing, to whoever was responsible for this sad lack of judgement.

I've been watching a lot of movies lately and it's surprising in how many one of the two romantic leads dies. It's becoming a cliche. For some reasons, writers think it's either more dramatic or meaningful. But it's really just a cliche... Great movie otherwise.
