Kano and Tashiro not real people?

Just to be sure, the two characters of Sozaburo Kano and Tashiro Hyozo are not historically real characters, correct? I know Okita, Hijikata, et. al. are historical people who really existed. I'm just wondering if the two main characters are fictitious for the purpose of making an interesting story.

Also, which book specifically, might I find this story in? Ryotaro Shiba has several books and I want to buy the right one.

Unless you can read Japanese, you do not get much of a choice in reading material.

Kodansha International publishes, in English, Drunk as a Lord: Samurai Stories. Translated by Eileen Kato (2001)

Other works available in English are biographical and historical.

Sozaburo Kano and Tashiro Hyozo are not historical characters. Are they "real" ? Yes!

What do you mean by "real"?

@aulic
does "Drunk as a Lord: Samurai Stories" also contain the love story of the two samurai? i'd love to read the book behind this brilliant movie, but only if the gay part is in it, too :D

besides,
does anyone know some other books/movies dealing with shudou/wakashudou??

I can't remember exactly how the story on Souzaburo goes, but very little is known about him(the story in the movie is not based upon his real life, he has only been mentioned briefly in one of the many books that this movie is based upon).
He was very young when he came into the shinsengumi, was an extremely promising samurai, but died in battle very soon after joining(can't remember the age, it wasn't what was the most interesting in Japanese Film class).
Whether what is told in the epic works is true or not, is harder to tell, and I can't remember if his whole name in the movie is real or not, but I believe at least one of them is right.
