Was Hijikata just daydreaming about those visions of Kano wearing a white robe, another white robe then a red robe meeting Okita? Or was it a memory...?

I just watched the film... I think he was daydreaming. We hear his thoughts a few times in the film, and I think that was a case of us seeing them too.

I agree that it was daydreaming--he had a vision. I also agree that like other things in the film, it is confusing.
